OPA sets pet-inspired readings

The Olympic Peninsula Authors (OPA) will be sharing stories or poems about our love for pets from 2-3 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct 9, at the Blue Whole Gallery, 129 W. Washington St.

The October Writers Read event is going to the pets in a special Pet-Octoberfest: Meowing, neighing, tweeting, barking pets delivering kisses and love. This is not just about bygone animals, event organizers note, but also the ones who are here with us now, helping us carry our loads.

This event is free and open to the public. For more information about the gallery, visit bluewholegallery.com.

Poetry reading on tap

“The Last Big Fear,” a casual gathering, poetry reading and discussion for those interested in experiencers — people who encounter nonhuman intelligence, transformational shifts in consciousness and more— is set for 6-8 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12, at Rainshadow Café, 157 W. Cedar St.

Eileen Meyer, a musician, author and “lifetime experiencer,” will read from her journals at this free event. For more about Meyere, visit linktr.ee/EMmin8ing.

Call for Squatchcon artists, vendors

Squatchcon Comic & Arts Convention, described as the Olympic Peninsula’s “weirdest celebration of art, pop culture, and local legends,” is back for its fourth year, from April 10-13, 2025. Artists, fans, cosplayers, and enthusiasts from across the Pacific Northwest are invited to experience this growing, multi-day event, which offers a unique blend of creativity, community and all things Sasquatch.

Squatchcon is calling on artisans, illustrators, comic creators and other vendors to apply for Artist Alley. The convention welcomes artists and vendors with niche interests in Sasquatch, fan culture, cosplay and more. Table fees are $150 for a full, 8-foot table or $75 for a half-table. There is no fee to apply, and applications are open now at squatchconpa.com. Squatchcon encourages vendors to participate throughout the weekend, with Thursday, April 10 as an optional setup day and a free community preview.

Tickets for Squatchcon 2025 are now on sale. Early bird pricing is available until Dec. 25, with adult tickets at $18 and teen tickets at $10. Tickets then increase to $20 for adults and $12 for teens. At-the-door pricing will be $25 for adults and $15 for teens. Children 12 and younger are admitted free with a pass-holding adult. All passes grant access to all four days of artist alley, panels, workshops, gaming events, parties and the cosplay contest.
