Backyard Birding is back, opens with ‘Winter Care’ presentation

After a long hiatus because of COVID-19 concerns and building construction, Backyard Birding returns at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, in the remodeled Dungeness River Nature Center, 1943 W. Hendrickson Road.

Presented by the Olympic Peninsula Audubon Society (OPAS), the Backyard Birding series features information about wild bird identification, biology, feeding, nesting and habitat in the region.

The classes, organizers said, are suited for people new to birding and to the Pacific Northwest, as well as those who wish to hone their bird knowledge and skills.

First in the 2022-2023 series is the popular “Winter Care and Feeding in Your Garden,” presented by Christie Lassen, co-owner of Wild Birds Unlimited in Gardiner. Lassen will describe general bird feeding methods — including types of feeders and various foods formulated to attract specific birds, especially those species wintering in our region.

She will describe clean feeding and watering techniques to promote healthy, thriving bird populations while discouraging unwelcome mammals. She will also describe the specific needs of the Anna’s Hummingbird species that has made the Pacific Northwest a yearlong home.

Lassen will highlight some selected products from Wild Birds Unlimited available for purchase at the conclusion of the program.

Admission will be free; however, a donation of $5 per person is suggested to support ongoing education programs.

Current COVID-19 safety precautions as recommended by Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe and Clallam County Public Health will be followed for the protection of attendees and volunteer staff.
