Five Buccaneer students earn SPJ awards

Five reporters from The Buccaneer, Peninsula College’s campus newspaper, recently received Mark of Excellence Awards from the Society of Professional Journalists.

Sarah Baker and Liz Wasson won in the category of In-Depth Reporting for their story, “Finding Freedom Behind Bars,” one that focused on how educational coursework prepares inmates for greater success upon release from prison.

Maddie Hunt, Zach Wakefield and Chana Meddin were named finalists for Region 10 in the General News Reporting category for “Writer in Residence ‘Takes a hike’ Along Elwha River: Lynda Mapes Highlights Climate Change and Restoration During Visit.”

The Buccaneer is the award-winning student-operated newspaper published three times per quarter. It covers campus life and matters of interest to PC students.
