Java-philes and casual coffee drinkers alike can get a deeper awareness for that beautiful bean by joining Clallam County Master Gardener Margery Whites for the Green Thumb Education Series presentation, “A History of Coffee,” scheduled for noon-1 p.m. on Thursday, July 27, in the Carver Room at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St.
Whites will talk about the coffee plant itself, where it is grown and how it is processed and roasted. She will also touch on how climate change is affecting coffee production and its growers.
“I hope [the presentation] will develop an increased appreciation of the coffee plant, trade, and roasting,” she said.
Join the meeting in person or on Zoom; get a link to the online presentation at extension.wsu.edu/clallam (meeting ID 936 2989 8830, passcode 676224). Or, join by phone at 253-215-8782.
Whites started roasting her own coffee at home. She learned to roast coffee in 2001 while studying Spanish in Guatemala, leading to an ongoing friendship with a “coffee perfectionist” who owns a coffee shop in Antigua, Guatemala.
Whites has been a Master Gardener since 2016; she moved here from Minnesota in 2015.
Sponsored by WSU Clallam County Master Gardeners, the Green Thumbs Garden Tips education series is offered on the second and fourth Thursday each month through October (in November, December and January, one program is offered).
Scheduled presentations are subject to change. Visit the WSU Extension Clallam County website calendar (extension.wsu.edu/clallam) for the latest information on upcoming presentations.
