Hop the bus for a cross-country tour of some of the finest music America has to offer.
This Saturday, March 2, the Olympic Peninsula Men’s Chorus presents “Harmony Hi-Way” for two special performances at 2 p.m. and 7:07 p.m. in the Sequim High School Performing Arts Center, 533 N. Sequim Ave.
The chorus’ 14 singers begin in New York and travel to San Francisco performing hits from the cities they pass on the map like “Coney Island Baby,” “Shenandoah” and “San Francisco Bay Blues.”
Using a bus prop in the vein of the Sequim Irrigation Festival’s float, the vehicle has a dramatic effect on its two drivers that organizers say audience members must witness for themselves.
Along for the ride are the Grand Olympics Chorus of Sweet Adelines International. This is its first time at the men’s chorus’ performance in several years. Also making the trek are Aspire!, a local women’s quartet, and the quartet No Batteries Required.
For the special concert, Madison Park, a barbershop group with members from the Puget Sound area and Canada, sings. It was named the Division II Champion last year and earned second place in the Evergreen District, which includes Montana, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, Alberta and British Columbia, to qualify and compete at the Barbershop Harmony Society International event.
While the event features some top local acts, the Olympic Peninsula Men’s Chorus dedicates the evening to founding member Hans Kask and long-time members Jerry Erb and Ted Anderson, who all died less than a year ago.
General admission for each show is $12 with funds helping the chorus with rehearsal space, music rights and for other shows, i.e. at local retirement communities. Tickets can be purchased from any of the local choruses’ members, Pacific Mist Books, Port Book and News and the Peninsula Daily News in Port Angeles, and at the door.
The Olympic Peninsula Men’s Chorus formed in 1983 and hosts a guest night at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, with the location to be determined in the Harmony Hi-Way program or by calling 681-7761 or looking on the group’s Facebook page.
