Local student teams to battle in annual Book Wars! competition

Game on!

Seventh- and eight-grade students from several Olympic Peninsula schools will vie for top prizes and honors at the annual Book Wars! competition set for 6:30 p.m. Friday, March 6, at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St.

Check-in time is 6:10 p.m. for this literary trivia competition that features teams from Sequim Middle School, Olympic Peninsula Academy, Stevens Middle School, Crescent School, Markishtum Middle School, Quileute Tribal School and Forks Junior High School.

The public is welcome to attend this fun community event.

Throughout the school year, students were challenged to read 12 books and then compete in semi-final elimination rounds to prepare for this culminating event.

Books included in the competition are: “Hey, Kiddo” by Jarrett Krosoczka; “Attucks! Oscar Robertson and the Basketball Team that Awakened a City” by Phillip M. Hoose; “The Assassination of Brangwain Spurge” by M. T. Anderson and illustrated by Eugene Yelchin; “The Only Road” by Alexandra Díaz; “Small Spaces” by Katherine Arden; “Akata Witch” by Nnedi Okorafor; “The Marrow Thieves” by Cherie Dimaline; “Lily and Dunkin” by Donna Gephart; “Finding Audrey” by Sophie Kinsella; “The Boy In The Striped Pajamas” by John Boyne; “The Seventh Most Important Thing” by Shelley Pearsall, and “The Benefits of Being an Octopus” by Ann Braden.

Book Wars is a joint program between local middle schools throughout the county and the North Olympic Library System. Funding for this program was provided by Sequim Middle School, the Friends of Sequim Library, Port Angeles Friends of the Library and Friends of the Forks Library.
