Sequim High seniors present ‘Grimm Spectaculathon’

Proceeds benefit class of ‘24

Cinderella, Snow White, and plenty of familiar characters from fairy tales come together this week for a comedic romp to support Sequim High’s class of 2024.

Students will present 200-plus stories, from the classic to the bizarre in one play — “The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon” — from Feb. 29-March 3.

Shows start at 7 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, and 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are online at sequimschools.org or at the door.

Ava Johnson, a senior, said the show is “mostly silly and chaotic” and that each tale presented has a connection somehow to the next.

“It’s funny and fast-paced, which makes it more fun for the actors,” said Becca van Dyken, a senior and vice-president of the Operetta Club.

“We wanted something everyone could enjoy and everyone knows classic fairy tales.”

Johnson serves as a narrator with fellow senior Fred Cameron who help audience members and cast members alike by recapping the many stories.

It’s one of many roles for Johnson, she said, including a prince, a dwarf and an enchantress.

Each person has at least two roles, said van Dyken, who plays Hansel and in a funny bit as a dirt merchant.

Johnson said this is her first lead role, and was asked to audition by director Anna Pederson after the previous lead became unavailable.

“I feel honored to do this role,” Johnson said.

The show was picked by the ASB as a fundraiser for the class of 2024. More than half of the cast is 12th graders, van Dyken said, which is a good turnout.

“Many of them aren’t theater kids, so they will only do the Senior Class play,” van Dyken said.

“It’s fun to bring in all our senior friends.”

Last year, she saw that it served as an avenue for students to try acting and build up their confidence enough to go try out for the annual operetta, too.

“It’s always good to start with a play — which is involved and all that — but you don’t have to dance and sing. It’s just lines,” van Dyken said.

“So to do this first gives everyone a foundation to build up to a musical, which I think is smart, and then they realize they enjoy it and (say) ‘Oh, I’ll do it again.’”

This year’s operetta, “The Addams Family,” runs during the Sequim Irrigation Festival in May.

Organizers say “Grimm’s” ticket proceeds support this year’s senior class activities.

“I don’t think you can come and have a bad time,” van Dyken said.

“I think no matter what, you’re going to enjoy it.”
