Going into the new year, the Port Angeles Symphony has plenty to offer for the remainder of its season.

Through May, there are three symphony concerts, four chamber concerts split between Sequim and Port Angeles, the Young Artists Competition later this month, the Applause! Auction in February and a special vocal performance set for Feb. 23.

Prospects for the symphony are looking up, says Mark Wendeborn, executive director for the symphony, after attendance for the opening symphony concert in November and season ticket sales weren’t exactly what they hoped.

“The December concert was within 30 tickets of selling out,” he said.

They’ve also seen a youth movement of sorts at their concerts. The symphony and its director Adam Stern took a chance this year by opening up its season with a Pops concert dedicated to video game music in Sequim and Port Angeles.

“It was very successful,” Wendeborn said. “It was important for us to do it and reach these young families.”

To promote younger attendees, the symphony gave out free admissions at the video game concert to a future performance and opened up its evening concerts for free for those under 16.

“We’re seeing a real presence of young people and families at concerts,” Wendeborn said. “They are either taking advantage of an admission we’ve given or of their child being able to get in for free and paying for an admission for themselves. Either way we’re reaching young people on the peninsula.”

The Young Artist Competition looks to be competitive and one of the biggest ever with 25 musicians participating.

Stern and the symphony are continuing to look for ways to outreach.

For next year’s Pop’s concert, he’s opened it up to the audience in the style of the Boston Pops by taking their suggestions and building a program from it.

At the end of their solid programming, Stern plans to finish the season with soloists from the area who are studying music and/or already performing professionally on May 9 in Port Angeles and May 10 in Sequim.
