United Way hosts tea benefiting Owens Fund

The first ever Peggy’s Birthday Tea, benefiting the Dick and Peggy Owens Fund of the Clallam Community Foundation, raised over $10,000 on March 20 at the Port Angeles Yacht Club.

More than 80 guests attended. Contributing businesses included Toga’s Restaurant, Bada NW, Camaraderie Cellars, DA Davidson, Green Crow and Jennifer Ciarlo, Edward Jones, Jim’s Pharmacy, Bada Bloom and Olympic Veterinary Clinic.

Friends of Peggy spoke about her generous spirit and described her as a well-loved and loving friend to many. She was known for finding and giving the perfect gift and would famously give gifts to her favorite businesses and to all of her friends on her own birthday.

“The intent of the Dick and Peggy Owen’s fund is to support United Way partners and other charitable community organizations in Clallam County that provide medical services to low-income, uninsured individuals and provide assistance to women leaving domestic abuse situations, who are working to become independent and self-sufficient” said Christy Smith, CEO of the United Way of Clallam County.

“In an effort to honor the memory of Peggy, a leadership team comprised of her friends and other like-minded, philanthropic women was formed with the goal of planning a fundraising event benefiting the Dick and Peggy Owens Fund: Peggy’s Birthday Tea,” continued Smith.

The funds raised during the event will be placed in the Dick and Peggy Owens Fund. The United Way Funds Distribution committee will make a recommendation for funding allocations which will go to the United Way board for approval and will follow the spending plan of the Clallam Community Foundation.
