Veterans Corner: Military Veterans Appreciation Day is Saturday

Jack Grennan Post 62 of the American Legion will partner with Home Depot for the annual Military Veterans Appreciation Day on Saturday, July 12 from the opening ceremony at 10 a.m. to closing at 2 p.m.

Veterans organizations will have booths in the parking lot. There is a raffle prize drawing for three Home Depot gift cards ($75, $100 and $150) and a grand prize of a Ryobi tool kit. There will be free hot dogs, water and cake.

Come out and meet your local veterans organizations and find out what projects they are involved in. I will be in the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) booth and hope to see you!

Turkey Shoot

Jack Grennan Post 62 of the American Legion will hold the annual Turkey Shoot on Saturday, Aug. 2 at 10 a.m. at the Peninsula Long Rifles Campground, Slab Camp Road in Sequim.

Registration is $10. Only 22-caliber rifles with open or peep sights will be used. Targets and ammo are provided. First prize is $150, second prize is $100 and third prize is $75, each with a frozen turkey breast.

There will be free food and drinks. This event is for veterans only. No concealed weapons are allowed in the Campground.

‘All American’

For the second year in a row, Sequim Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4760 has been named an “All American” Post. The year ended on June 30.

Approximately 4-5% of all posts nationally achieve the “All American” status. It requires meeting the VFW National goals for assistance to veterans, community service, youth education, teacher of the year and exceeding membership by at least 102 percent.

Help for veterans

Two service officers will be at the Sequim VFW on Saturday, July 12 from noon to 5 p.m. Any veteran is welcome to meet with them in the annex room to get help with claims or other needs.

Sequim VFW is located at 169 E. Washington St.

Annual picnic

The Olympic Peninsula Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America’s annual picnic will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 20 at Olympic Bluff Cidery and Lavender Farm. Optional cider tasting and fun facts will be available.

The event will be catered by The Goat & The Radish. They will provide a box lunch for around $30. Orders must be submitted and paid for by Aug. 1.
