Young Artist applications available

Applications for Port Angeles Symphony’s 25th annual Young Artist Competition and fifth annual Junior Artist Competition are available at the symphony office and www.portangelessymphony.org.

The deadline for both competitions is Wednesday, Dec. 1. Registration fees are $10 for the Young Artist Competition and $5 for the Junior Artist Competition.

The Young Artist Competition is open to any North Olympic Peninsula instrumental music student who will be younger than 22 years old on June 1, 2011, and who did not win first prize in the 2010 competition.

Prior year winners are eligible to compete.

The junior competition is open to any North Olympic Peninsula instrumental music student who currently is in ninth grade or below who has not competed or applied for the Symphony’s Young Artist Competition or won first prize in the 2010 competition.

Competitors are to perform a selection of music of concert quality, which does not need to be a concerto. The performance should not exceed 10 minutes.

Competitors must provide their own piano accompanist for the competition. Only piano accompaniment is permitted and only one piano is available.

The competitions begins at approximately 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 301 Lopez Ave., Port Angeles.

Applicants should arrive at least 10 minutes before their performance.

Competitors must be present to compete.

Results will be e-mailed to competitors the afternoon of the competition.

The first-place Young Artist Competition winner receives a $500 cash award and may be asked to perform at an orchestra concert.

The first-place Junior Young Artist Competition winner receives a $250 cash award.
