The Sequim School District and Sequim Police Department are investigating acts of vandalism that occurred at Sequim High School late Sunday night, June 1, involving about 50 students.
No permanent damage was done, but eggs were smashed both inside and outside the building and an “offensive” message was written on a whiteboard, according to Megan Lyke, the district’s public information officer. She also said that teachers’ items were moved, but did not have further details.
Deputy Chief John Southard of the Sequim Police Department said the matter is under investigation. He declined to provide further comment.
Lyke told the Sequim Gazette around mid-afternoon Wednesday, June 4, that she did not know whether the incident involved a “senior prank,” as it occurred just days before graduation, or whether the students were of different grade levels.
“I do know that they were students,” she said.
A review of campus cameras indicated that the students made unauthorized entry onto school property at around 10:30 p.m. Lyke said she had not seen the video and did not know how long the group remained onsite.
Even though no permanent damage was done, Lyke noted that the mess “was time consuming to clean up” and “left an odor in carpeted surfaces in various parts of the building.”
She said it was cleaned up with the help of administrators, teachers, custodial staff and students by 9 a.m., just ahead of the 9:15 a.m. late start of school on Monday.
Lyke said the school district has “some really great students” and noted that some helped clean up the mess created by their fellow classmates.
“It’s really too bad, this whole situation,” she said.
