For the 11th consecutive year, Rotarians passed out colorful hardbound dictionaries to all Greywolf Elementary and Helen Haller Elementary fourth-grade students. The Harry Hughes Memorial Dictionary Project is an annual event sponsored by the Sequim Noon Rotary Club. Students eagerly were paging through their books just after receiving them. GREYWOLF ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
After a week’s delay due to inclement weather, the Jog-A-Thon took place on Friday, Oct. 14. All students participated and $10,387.10 was raised to help pay for numerous PTA programs, including PE equipment, Math Night and Ice Cream Social, Smartboards and science supplies.
Top winners by grade of the 230 students who turned in pledges were: Garrett Little from Bethany Robbins’ morning kindergarten class, Chase Tilton from Kelli Mishko’s afternoon kindergarten class, Aiden Lara from Cathy Green’s first-grade class, Lilly Janis from Caryn Little’s second-grade class, Anthony Cortani from Pat Quinet’s third-grade class, Kaylee Dunlap from Teresa Iversen’s fourth-grade class and Connor Lamb from John Cole’s fifth-grade class.
We greatly appreciated the dedication of our local firefighters in educating our students this week on fire safety. Jared Romberg, Joel Bower, Larry Parker and Troy Tenneson from Clallam County Fire District 3 and Dan Wagner from Port Ludlow Fire & Rescue were on hand to lead students in a Q&A session on fire safety in the gymnasium. Students next were directed through an obstacle course and walked through a demonstration in the fire safety trailer. Each student was given the opportunity to spray the fire hose.

HELEN HALLER ELEMENTARY
â– The Helen Haller PTO McTakeover was a huge success and raised $2,100! All the money will be donated to Violet’s Fund to benefit a fifth-grade Helen Haller student as she receives treatment for brain cancer.
We thank the volunteers, Haller staff members, students, families and community members for attending and supporting the event and for making such generous donations to this cause.

â– A Scholastic Book Fair in the school library will be Friday, Oct. 28, and during parent/teacher conference days on Oct. 31-Nov. 1. The fair will be 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Prices usually range from $4 up, with the average book priced around $6. Sales tax is charged. Debit and credit cards may be used. New this year is our Online Book Fair at www.scholastic.com/school
bookfairs. It is available from Oct. 27-Nov. 4. There will be no shipping charges on book orders shipped to the school. All proceeds go to support school library programs.

â– Claire Hallinan’s third-grade class has been at work on “Launching the Writing Workshop” this month. Here are more samples from her students:
I went to eastern Washington for my birthday. I had a blast. My dad rented a motor boat. My dad took me for a ride. He took me to a cliff. I was scared once I got up there, but I jumped. I never felt so alive.

During the week, I went to an uncle’s birthday party. We were roller blading. He had a cake that said “Happy Birthday, Have a Nice Roller Blading Party!” He got new skates that were deep lake blue. He also got a new car that was the color of sunset. He went roller blading to use his new skates. They were so new that they made him slip. In fact, he fell on the bottom on his birthday. He broke his thumb when he fell.

Today, after school and Boys & Girls Club, I got football pictures, Kaiden, Caleb, and me and other people. I hope it’s hot there. They are my friends. All of us won all the games so far. We are really good at football. Then we all take pictures. When we first get there, we play around. We all play football together. Our team is really feisty. I keep tackling down the other team’s quarterback. That’s how we won. And we got touchdowns.

Last year, Sumer and I first became friends. It started when I first heard him talking about Star Wars. I love Star Wars, so I went over to him and started talking to him and Jackson. At recess, we played Star Wars. It was really fun. Then we started to have play dates, and we found out that we both liked the same things. Then we became best friends. We started to have a lot more play dates. I didn’t want to go back to Wisconsin but had to. I was so happy when I came back because I got to see Sumer again. This year, Sumer and I get to have a play date every Friday.

SEQUIM MIDDLE SCHOOL
In celebration of teens reading everywhere, the library at Sequim Middle School, Sequim High School and our own public library are pulling out all the stops for Teen Read Week. The theme this year is “Picture It! @ your library.” This time is set aside annually by the American Library Association as a week to have fun with what kids are reading. At the library in the middle school, students will enjoy participating in activities such as book-inspired Pictionary, Create-your-own bookmarks, half-minute horror stories and a video premiere of “A Day in the Life of a Middle School Student.” Other activities are offered at the high school and public libraries.
The Book Fair will run Oct. 26-Nov. 3 during school hours and during parent/teacher conferences on Nov. 1. Grandparents are invited to come for a special lunch during Book Fair Week, so ask your student about signing up to participate. Get your Christmas shopping done early and purchase books!

SEQUIM HIGH SCHOOL
â– A pre-season girls’ bowling team meeting will be held at 2:45 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26, in room H-135. Bowling turnout begins Monday, Oct. 31.
â– Sequim High School offers a meeting in order to complete the Running Start Enrollment Verification Form for winter quarter. The meeting is set for 3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26, in the cafeteria. Bring the Running Start Verification Form and a pen. Counselors will be signing FTE verification forms at this time.
â– Senior photos for the yearbook are due by 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28. They should be digital and at least 500 KB in size. Please contact Jim Heintz immediately if you can’t get it in by that date. They can be e-mailed to jheintz@sequim.k12.wa.us. If you are planning on placing a senior parent ad in the yearbook, the deadline is Tuesday, Jan. 31, by 3 p.m. There will be no exceptions to this deadline. The ad usually includes a brief note (not a letter!) to the graduate and a photo (quite often a baby photo). The cost is $50 for a quarter-page senior parent ad.
ASB students will be hosting Haunted Hallways from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, in the “H” building complex. Dress up the kids in their Halloween costumes and come over to enjoy lots of fun and games.
Parent-teacher conferences will be held in the gymnasium from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. and 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1. There will be no school for students on this day.
