Countywide ban upgraded
The countywide burn ban has been upgraded, prohibiting recreational fires except within the Olympic National Park and other controlled campgrounds, after the fire danger level was raised to “moderate.”
While a burn ban is in effect, any illegal burning will result in the property owner being liable for all fire suppressant costs, fines and fees, including prosecution.
Maintaining a 30-foot defensible space around structures will help aid firefighters.

Sequim centennial meeting
The “Sequimtennial” Committee meets from 1-2 p.m. today, Aug. 17, at the Sequim Transit Center, 190 W. Cedar St. The next meeting is Sept. 21.
Planning commission meets today
The Clallam County Planning Commission holds its regular meeting at 6:30 p.m. today, Aug. 17, at the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles. (After-hours public entrance is from Fourth Street.)
On the agenda: Shoreline Inventory and Characterization Reports and drafts; draft Watershed Resource Inventory Area 20 Visioning Forum and Interviews Report.
The agenda lists two opportunities for public comment; comments should be limited to three minutes.

Blood drive
Knights of Columbus Council 8455 sponsors a blood drive with the Puget Sound Blood Center from noon-2:30 p.m. and 2:45-6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 18, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 121 Maple St., Sequim.
Scheduling is first-come, first-served with no pre-appointments.

Thrift shop open Saturday
Sequim Dungeness Hospital Guild’s thrift shop, 204 W. Bell Street, Sequim, will be open from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20. All white tag items will be half price.

Free community dinner planned
A free community dinner will be served at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 25, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 Blake Ave., Sequim. The dinner includes lemon chicken, rice, mixed vegetables, coleslaw, dessert and beverages. A sing-along will follow. The church presents the community dinners on the last Thursday of each month.

Town hall meeting on Alzheimer’s set
A town hall meeting about combating Alzheimer’s disease will be held from 1-3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 26, at the Sequim Senior Activity Center, 921 E. Hammond St., Sequim. The Alzheimer’s Association local chapter sponsors this public input session to listen to views and perspectives of stakeholders in the Alzheimer’s community about what a National Alzheimer’s Plan should include. Recommendations and comments expressed will be collected, analyzed and presented to officials from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the agency responsible for creating a national plan that will address the rapidly escalating Alzheimer’s crisis. City promotes day of service
The National Day of Service-United Way Day of Caring is Sept. 10.
Citizens are invited to join City of Sequim staffers to volunteer and participate in various projects throughout the city, including painting fire hydrants, painting the agility course at the dog park, weeding throughout the city and cleaning areas of the Olympic Discovery Trail or Bell Creek.

Wellness Fair and Fun Walk scheduled
Dungeness Valley Health and Wellness Clinic sponsors its annual Clinic Fun Walk and Wellness Fair beginning at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 Blake Ave., Sequim. The event raises awareness of Sequim’s Free Clinic, its programs and services.
Health screening booths are free at the Wellness Fair, and participants in the Fun Walk can choose a 1-mile or a 5-mile course. This year there will be an “Images of Health” costume contest.
