Blue Whole Gallery to host free demonstration

Gilbert will teach book arts, book binding at March 29 event

Blue Whole Gallery, 129 W. Washington St., will be the site of a free demonstration on book arts and book binding at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 29.

Titled “Possibilities,” the session will be led by artist Lisa Gilbert.

The demonstration will provide hands-on experience, giving participants the opportunity to create a simple book structure using paper and waxed linen thread.

Materials will be provided at no charge.

Gilbert, a book artist since 2008, has taken dozens of book arts and printing classes in the United States and England. She has taught many classes in the U.S. and has exhibited her books in galleries, studios and stores.

Gilbert started making blank journals and artist books before moving to more complicated, three-dimensional structures. Each piece is one of a kind, incorporating unique paper, fabrics, collage, thread, text, ephemera and natural treasures.

During the demonstration, participants will have the opportunity to sign up for more in-depth classes offered by Gilbert through Blue Whole Gallery. Classes will begin on Sunday, April 13 and will be from 3-6 p.m.
