Sequim Bay closes to shellfish harvesting

Sequim Bay is closed to all species for recreational shellfish harvesting, county officials said on July 2.

The Clallam County Department of Health and Human Services’ Environmental Health Division posted the downgrade announcement to the presence of biotoxins found in Sequim Bay.

Discovery Bay, Dungeness Bay and the Strait of Juan de Fuca from Low Point/Lyre River east to Discovery Bay are closed to butter and varnish clams.

Strait of Juan de Fuca from Low Point/Lyre River east to Dungeness Spit is open to all species, however.

Ocean beaches are closed to all species — meaning all clams (including geoduck), oysters, mussels and other invertebrates such as the moon snail. All areas are also closed for the sport harvest of scallops. The closures do not apply to shrimp.

For more information about the closure, call the Shellfish Safety Hotline at 800-562-5632, or visit the Washington state Department of Health’s shellfish safety website at doh.wa.gov/shellfishsafety.

Sunbelt Apartments gets renovation

Sunbelt Apartments in Sequim recently received a full remodel courtesy of funding provided by the Washington State Department of Commerce’s Housing Preservation Program, representatives with Serenity House of Clallam County said last week.

Sunbelt was built in 1948 and the location was secured for use as permanent supportive housing through the Housing Trust Fund.

Serenity House provides housing support services at Sunbelt, and full ownership of the property was transferred to Serenity House in October 2019.

With the change of ownership, funds were provided to update the sewer line, Serenity House representatives noted last week. After site assessment, it was determined that a full renovation was required. Serenity House applied for and was awarded a $428,795 housing preservation grant from WA Commerce, providing interior finishes for all 16 apartment units and common areas.
