Get tickets for guild event

The Sequim Dungeness Hospital Guild will host its annual May luncheon, fashion show and silent auction on May 28 in Club 7 of 7 Cedars Casino. A social hour will commence at 11 a.m. with time to view and bid on items in the silent auction. Awards will be made at noon followed by lunch and a fashion show. The price for all three events is $18 and can be purchased at the thrift shop at 204 W. Bell St. Call 683-7044 for more information.

 

School retirees to meet for lunch, presentation

The Clallam County School Retiree Association will meet from noon-2 p.m. Tuesday, May 12, in the cafe at the North Olympic Peninsula Skills Center, 905 W. Ninth St, Port Angeles.

Lunch is $11 and seating begins at 11:45 a.m.; the public is invited. The program is “Back County Horsemen” with Cate Bendock, a member of the Back County Horseman’s group.

 

Nash’s talk at SARC

The Sequim Aquatic Recreation Center’s monthly health talk for May is scheduled for 1:30-2:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 6, in the SACR gymnasium, 610 N. Fifth Ave. The talk features Patty McManus of Nash’s Organic Produce. McManus speaks about what is new at the farm, some of their programs and how the business is helping the community. This event is free and no reservations are required.


Marijuana ordinance on commission agenda

The Clallam County Planning Commission meets at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 6, at the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles.

Agenda items are an ordinance request to amend Clallam County code that would create a new chapter titled “Recreational Marijuana,” allowing indoor licensed recreational marijuana producers, marijuana processors and marijuana retailers, and an update on the Clallam County Shoreline Master Program.


Coffee with mayor set

The City of Sequim “Coffee with the Mayor” program continues in May. Sequim residents can meet informally with Sequim Mayor Candace Pratt, at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, May 7, at Adagio Bean & Leaf, 981 East Washington St. The mayor will be at a different published location each month to listen to anyone who wants to chat, ask questions, express a concern or make a comment about the city or the community. FOSL book sale slated

Friends of the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave., will have its monthly book sale behind the library from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, May 9. Books of special interest will be gardening, golf, ghost stories, fly-fishing, Western fiction and dozens of DVDs.


Surplus sale is Saturday

The North Peninsula Building Association will hold its annual Builders’ Surplus Sale at the Clallam County Fairgrounds on Saturday, May 9. The sale is noon-3 p.m. and there will be a large selection of new and used building materials and home improvement supplies along with discounted service certificates for landscaping materials.

The NPBA welcomes donations from the public of saleable items. Limited pick-up service is available. Call the NPBA office for drop-off arrangements or additional details at 452-8160.


Port Angeles offers free compost-making tour

The City of Port Angeles will recognize International Compost Awareness Week May 3-9. To celebrate, the City of Port Angeles and Waste Connections is offering a free tour starting at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 9. Advance registration is required; register at www.cityofpa.us (Compost Facility page) or call 417-4874. The walking tour will last about one hour. Outdoor clothing and boots are recommended.


Artist supports OPEN

Artist Jeff Beck will donate half of her proceeds from an art and tack sale from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday-Sunday, May 9-10, at 51 Maple Leaf Lane, Sequim, to the Olympic Peninsula Equine Network.


Sequim Elks Lodge offers Mom’s Day brunch

The Sequim Elks Lodge, 143 Port Williams Road, will host a Mother’s Day Brunch from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Sunday, May 10. On the menu are scrambled eggs, link sausage, fried potatoes, fresh fruit, orange juice, waffles with strawberries and champagne. Adults are $10; children 6 and older are $5; and ages 5 and under are free.


Maypole dance planned

This year after the Irrigation Festival grand parade on Saturday, May 9, Sequim Museum and Arts will be giving the community a chance to attempt a trial of the maypole dance at the Logging Show on Blake Avenue. Guests will be offered a ribbon position and walked through a few patterns. The maypole dance was a long-time tradition of the festival.


OCS schedules open house

Olympic Christian School is holding its annual Open House and Family Night from 6-8 p.m. Friday, May 8, at 43 O’Brien Road, Port Angeles. Classrooms will be open for visits and teachers will be available to answer any questions. There will be information about enrollment available also. The playground will have supervision available with games for the children to play, so parents can tour the school. For more information, call 457-4640.


Checkpoints group shows film

The Stop the Checkpoints group meets from 6-8 p.m. Monday, May 11, in the Carver Room at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 Peabody St. The group screens a newly released film “No Sanctuary: The Big Business of Family Detention” that chronicles the return of an immigrant family in detention in the United States. Learn about geology of spit

As one of the scheduled events to mark The Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge’s 100th anniversary, the Coastal Watershed Institute’s Executive Director Anne Shaffer will have a free presentation on the forces that created and maintain the Dungeness Spit from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, May 16, at the Dungeness River Audubon Center in Railroad Bridge Park, 2151 W. Talk about trail expansion scheduled for May 13

The Peninsula Trails Coalition is holding its annual membership meeting, open to the public, Wednesday, May 13, at the Audubon Center at Railroad Bridge Park in Sequim. Refreshments begin at 6:30 p.m. followed by presentations from 7-8:30 p.m. about current and future developments on the Olympic Discovery Trail in Clallam and Jefferson counties. Sequim Library offering meditation class

The Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave., concludes its Taking Care of You health series at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 14, with a free workshop about meditation and what it means to overall health. Workshop space is limited; pre-registration is encouraged. Call 683-1161. Drop-in attendees are welcome as space allows.

 

Senior Nutrition menu set

Sequim Senior Nutrition Site menus are served at 4:30 p.m. at Suncrest Village Retirement Apartments, 251 S. Fifth Ave. Suggested donation is $5 (60 and over), $8 guest and a 24-hour advance reservation is needed. RSVP to 683-8491. Menus are subject to change.
