SARC effort gets boost; Democrats take up tuna donation challenge; political rally set; camera club features members’ talk, more

Democrats take up tuna donation challenge

Clallam County Democrats challenged all local Democrats to join in a month-long effort to contribute to Clallam County food banks with canned tuna and/or dollars. The goal is 1,000 cans of tuna by April 30. Drop off canned tuna to the Clallam County Democratic Headquarters at 124A W. First St. in Port Angeles, from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday. Mail checks to Clallam County Democrats, PO Box 2454, Port Angeles, WA, 98362.


Political rally set

The public and prospective candidates for office are invited to a non-partisan “Old Style Political Rally” at 6:30 p.m. today, April 15, at the Carpenter’s Hall, next door to the Port Angeles Post Office. Clallam County Auditor Shoona Riggs will be on hand to explain the process for anyone seeking to get their name on the ballot or register to vote. The deadline for candidates to declare is mid-May. Speakers are scheduled who hope to outline issues facing the community.


Camera club features members’ talk

The Olympic Peaks Camera Club will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 23, at Dungeness Community Church, 45 Eberle Lane, Sequim. This month’s meeting features a member presentation program. Three club members will share some of their ideas and photos.

Celene Wendt will speak about “Creative Ideas for Displaying Your Photos,” Jim Martin will show that “Black & White Has Impact” and Tim O’Neill will address the question: “Did you Photoshop this picture?”


Marine interns sought

The Clallam Marine Resources Committee seeks qualified candidates to fill intern positions. Interns will work closely with MRC members on projects intended to protect and restore marine resources. For how to apply, see www.clallamcountymrc.org by April 30.


Pioneer Dinner tickets on sale

The annual Sequim Pioneer Dinner will be held at the Sequim Prairie Grange at 4:30 p.m. Friday, May 8. Tickets are available and

can be purchased through Hazel Ault at Broker’s Group Realty, 681-8778. The ticket price is $l7. To qualify for attendance you you must be a descendant of a pioneer family and have lived in the Sequim School District for 40 or more years.

 

Commission to discuss marijuana ordinance

The Clallam County Planning Commission meets at 6:30 p.m. today, April 15, at the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles. Agenda items include the Draft November 2014 Clallam County Shoreline Master Program and the Draft Recreational Marijuana Ordinance. Call 417-2277.


A few words about bees

The Dungeness River Audubon Center, 2151 W. Hendrickson Road, Sequim, will feature a free talk about native bees from 7-9 p.m. today, April 15, by Jerry Freilich of Olympic National Park, who holds a PhD in entomology.


Military careers workshop set

Jet Set Soroptimist-Port Angeles and Port Angeles High School NROTC are sponsoring a “Women in Military Careers” workshop at 6:30 p.m. today, April 15, at the Port Angeles Veterans Center, 216 S. Francis St.

The workshop will be presented for young women between the ages of 14-25 who have questions about what kind of careers are available for women.


Benefit bunco afternoon

The Sequim Guild benefiting Seattle Children’s Hospital is hosting a luncheon and afternoon of bunco at noon Friday, April 17, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 525 N. Fifth Ave., Sequim. Doors open at 11:30 a.m. The cost is $15 — all profits go to the uncompensated care fund at Seattle Children’s Hospital.


Thrift shop open Saturday

The Sequim Dungeness Hospital Guilds Thrift Shop, 204 W. Bell St. in Sequim, will be open from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, April 18. Spring and summer fashions for the entire family will be featured along with fashion accessories, home decor items, fine dishware, kitchen utensils, puzzles, books and furniture. All white tag items will be marked at half-price. Consigners and new volunteers always are needed. Call 683-7044 for information.

 

Nature program for youngsters set for Saturday

Learn how to be a scientist in your own backyard at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St., Port Angeles. On Saturday, April 18, the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture presents a free special family program for children ages 3-5 that is all about nature, bugs, plants and animals. Drop in between 10 a.m.-noon to make pollinator puppets, solve habitat mysteries and play nature-themed games.


Mining for garnets

Clallam County Gem and Mineral Association president Scott Thornhill and club member Deanna Reynolds are featured speakers at the club’s April 21 meeting, at 7 p.m. at the Fifth Avenue Retirement Center, 500 W. Hendrickson Road, Sequim. Come and participate in a discussion of the locations, access and methods of mining for garnets.


Geocachers plan area cleanup

Olympic Peninsula Geocachers are organizing a trash cleanup (CITO – Cache In Trash Out) to clean up several sites in and around the Sequim area. Meet outside Westside Pizza at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 25, to sign in and sign liability waivers. Trash bags and two sizes of disposable gloves are provided. Wear appropriate clothing for the weather and possible wet ground. Cleanup continues until 11 a.m. followed by a no-host lunch at Westside Pizza. Landscaping workshop set

The Clallam Conservation District is offering a free field workshop on landscaping with native plants at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 25, at the Dungeness Recreation Area.

Due to space limitations, pre-registration is required. Call 775-3747 ext. 5 for more information and to register. More than 25 native trees and shrubs will be described.


Senior Nutrition menu set

Sequim Senior Nutrition Site menus are served at 4:30 p.m. at Suncrest Village Retirement Apartments, 251 S. Fifth Ave. Suggested donation is $5 (60 and over), $8 guest, and a 24-hour advance reservation is needed. RSVP to 683-8491. Menus are subject to change.
