Clallam County Fire District 3 is encouraging residents to prepare for this week’s predicted cold weather.

The last cold period saw the fire district respond to multiple calls for broken domestic and fire sprinkler water pipes.

To prevent this type of problem, maintain heat in areas where pipes are not covered by insulation.

If possible cover pipes with insulation or newspaper and plastic material and allow faucets to drip a little during cold weather to avoid freezing.

Running water, even at a trickle, helps prevent pipes from freezing.

Learning where the water shut-off valve is located for your home or business could save hundreds of dollars in costly water damage.

Space heaters require space

Using electric heaters require at least 3 feet of space around the heater.

Carbon Monoxide detectors should have fresh batteries and be located in the area of sleeping rooms if you use a fuel fired heating appliance.

Use clean seasoned firewood and never burn anything other than firewood inside of a fireplace.

Never use cooking stoves, barbeques or other non-approved heating equipment inside a residence.

Smoke detectors should be tested monthly and batteries replaced at least once a year. Plan and practice an escape route out of every area of your home.
