Kathryn Landoni has a busy summer ahead of her — and it’s not just about getting ready for Oregon State University’s honors program in the fall.

Landoni and Alexandra Smerekanych of Newport High School were selected earlier this month by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction to represent Washington at the National Youth Science Camp, June 17-July 11. The camp, set near Bartow in the eastern mountains of West Virginia, is an annual summer forum where two delegates from each state exchange ideas with leading scientists and other professionals from academic and corporate worlds. Camp lectures and hands-on research projects are presented by scientists from across the United States who work on some of the most provocative topics in science today – fractal geometry, the human genome project, global climate change, the history of the universe, the fate of rain forests and robotics.

Landoni has received numerous science, technology, engineering and math awards and honors. She was selected to participate in the Germany for STEM Students Program where she traveled to Germany and explored research institutions. She also was selected as a Washington STEM delegate to travel to both San Jose, Calif., and Washington, D.C., to present research findings and compete in a national competition.
