SPD hosts public safety fair
Sequim Police Department will hold a public safety fair from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, at the Guy Cole Convention Center in Carrie Blake Park on Blake Avenue in Sequim. In addition to public safety information, the fair will feature information on crime prevention, emergency preparedness and public health. A number of police, fire and emergency vehicles will be on hand for viewing. Thirty public service agencies will be represented. There will be door prizes and giveaways to the first 400 attendees.
Reinvigorating the Grange
for a new generation of farmers
Exploring how a new generation of small farmers and other community members with an interest in developing a more sustainable farm and food system might better connect through local Granges is the topic of an upcoming meeting in Sequim.
Sponsored by Washington State University Clallam County Extension and the Sequim Prairie Grange, the event titled "Recreating the ‘Culture’ in Agriculture" will be held from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26, at the Sequim Prairie Grange, 290 Macleay Road in Sequim.
The guest speaker will be Michael Ableman, a farmer and the author of "Fields of Plenty: A Farmer’s Journey in Search of Real Food and People Who Grow It" and "The Good Land."
Farmers and interested community members from neighboring counties are welcome to join in the discussion on a space-available basis.

Well 101: Operations and
Maintenance of a Small Water System
Clallam County Environmental Health is offering a Well 101 class for operators of small Group B water systems and private well owners. Participants will learn how to inspect, maintain and protect their well water system and about testing the water quality. The class is 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, at the Dungeness River Audubon Center, 2151 W. Hendrickson Road, Sequim. The class is free and open to the public. No preregistration is required. Lions Club hosts Halloween party
Sequim Dungeness Valley Lion’s Club hosts a Halloween party with free candy and apples starting at 5 p.m. Oct. 31 at McDonald’s of Sequim, 107 S. Seventh Ave.
Young guests also receive coupons from McDonald’s for food and may receive party prizes. Last year’s party hosted about 550 guests.

WSP launches improved Web site
Washington State Patrol has launched a new and improved public Web site. The address remains www.wsp.wa.gov, but some of the pages have been relocated on the site. The new site has easier navigation and layout. It was designed in response to research about user needs, with special attention paid to the most-visited pages.
The improvements include a comprehensive A-Z index, updated Employment page, enhanced Missing Children and Most Wanted pages, as well as a new search feature on the WSP’s Scale Certifications page.

Family Planning
holds open meeting
Family Planning of Clallam County, a local United Way Agency, has its October board of directors meeting beginning at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 20, at 1106 E. First St., Port Angeles. The meeting is open to the public. Family Planning welcomes community members who are interested in the agency, its services/programs, future directions and those interested in serving on the board of directors. Clallam County Prayer Breakfast
Apollo 16 astronaut Charlie Duke will be the featured speaker at The 12th annual Clallam County Prayer Breakfast.
The breakfast will be held 6:30-8:30 a.m. Oct. 24 at Sequim Community Church, 950 N. Fifth Ave., Sequim.
Clallam County Prayer Breakfast provides a forum for local civic, business and community members to hear an evangelistic message from a prominent individual and the opportunity to pray for government leadership.

The tax man cometh
The second-half taxes for 2008 are due by Friday, Oct. 31, 2008, according to Clallam County treasurer Judith A. Scott. There are several drop-off locations throughout the county. In Sequim, payment may be dropped off at the office in the Sequim Plaza at 1001 E. Washington St. Accessing all payment options is available at www.clallam.net under New Features or at www.officialpayment.com. Payment must be either in the office or postmarked by Oct. 31. Payments postmarked on or after Nov. 1 will considered late and subject to 1 percent delinquent interest based on the balance due. For further questions call the Treasurer’s Office at 417-2344.
VFW Ladies host ‘Rock-a-Thon’
District 14 Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary hosts a "Rock-A-Thon" from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Nov. 15 at auxiliary homes throughout the district,
Auxiliary members will rock in rocking chairs to raise money for the Voice of Democracy scholarship program.
District 14 auxiliaries are in Sequim, Port Angeles, Brinnon, Port Hadlock, Port Townsend and Forks.
Members of the auxiliaries are rocking for an hour at a time at each post home. The public is invited to pick up information on the scholarship programs, find out how to become a member and cheer on the "golden oldies" as they rock for a good cause.
