Kaylee Madison Springfield
A celebration of life was held for Port Angeles resident Kaylee Madison Springfield, who died April 10, 2008, at the age of 9 of cancer.
She was born March 8, 1999, in Port Angeles to Chad and Kimberly Bolstrom Springfield.

Sheldon C. ‘Uncle Shelly’ Andresen
A private family gathering will be held for former Sequim resident Sheldon C. ‘Uncle Shelly’ Andresen, who died March 28, 2008, at the age of 88.
He was born Sept. 30, 1919, in Douglas, N.D., to Segurd and Helen Mortan Andresen.
He was raised and attended school in North Dakota.
Following the unexpected death of his parents, he and his brothers were left to tend the farm and enter the workforce at an early age.
He eventually moved to Seattle, where he worked for a landscaping company.
While in Seattle, he met Viola Dorothy Degerness. They were married on April 17, 1944, in Seattle.
The Andresens built the first of their many homes in Seattle. They would build a home, reside in it, sell it and build a new one.
They traveled to Alaska to be part of a family partnership to run a sawmill. There they also owned a commercial fishing boat, the “Pauline,” and harvested halibut and salmon. Mr. Andresen helped build a schoolhouse in Pelican, Alaska.
They moved between Seattle and Alaska twice, once to rebuild the Pelican schoolhouse after a fire, before they settled on a hobby farm in Addy.
While in Addy, he assisted with construction of the Jenkins High School in Chewelah.
Their next move was to Sequim, where they lived for many years.
Their 54 years of marriage was a testimony of eternal love and infinite compassion for one another. Mrs. Andresen died in 1998.
He remained in Sequim until he moved to Chewelah in 2003 to be near family.
He was a gentle man, who gave of himself in kind, generous and loving ways. Due to his kindness, he became known as “Uncle Shelly” by those who became familiar with him. He was passionate about gardening, tending to their orchard, hunting and fishing.
They also shared a love for square dancing and early Latin music.
Mr. Andresen is survived by his daughter Carol Mercer; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Mike and Avis Guilmet of Sequim; two grandchildren; three nephews; two nieces; four great-nephews; four great-nieces; and eight great-great nephews and nieces.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Andresen was preceded in death by three brothers and a nephew.
Memorial contributions may be sent to St. Joseph’s Hospital.

Dorothy A. Herman
A service has been held for Sequim resident Dorothy A. Herman, who died April 8, 2008, at the age of 94.
She was born April 19, 1913, in Spokane, to Frank Wayne and Gertrude Louisa Haupt Sturgis.
She married Claude Richard Velie on Nov. 25, 1939, in Spokane. He preceded her in death on Feb. 8, 1958.
She married Fred W. Herman on April 10, 1961, in Seattle. He preceded her in death in November 2004.
She worked as an executive secretary in Spokane, Olympia and Yuma, Ariz., before moving to Sequim in the early 1980s and later to Port Angeles.
She enjoyed sewing, cooking, gardening and oil painting.
She was a member of United Presbyterian Church of Olympia and garden clubs.
She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law Gary and Beth Velie of Port Angeles; Ralph and Nancy Velie of Lake Forest Park; step-sons and daughters-in-law Lloyd and Linda Herman and Gary and Alice Herman of Spokane; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by brother George Sturgis.

Carl ‘Chuck’ Stillman
A service has been held for Sequim resident Carl “Chuck” Stillman, who died April 8, 2008, at the age of 89.
He was born Sept. 5,1918, in Valley City, N.D., to Leon Elliot and Dena Aletta Schroeder Stillman.
He married Anabelle Morrison on June 21, 1942, in Spokane. She preceded him in death in 2005.
Mr. Stillman attended Washington State College, now Washington State University, where he met his wife. He graduated from University of Puget Sound with a degree in economics.
He worked for the Northern Pacific in Tacoma, then Burlington Northern Railroad as chief dispatcher. Upon retirement, he started tree farming, planting more than 1 million trees.
He was a private pilot and a member of Olympic Bible Fellowship.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Don and Judy Stillman of Washington D.C.; daughters and sons-in-law Diana and Rich Hay of Sequim and Kathy and Dick Page of Soldotna, Alaska; sisters and brother-in-law Eva and Don Rogers and Margaret Cordell of Seattle; and Leona Rennells
of Longview; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; 20 nephews and nieces; and numerous great-nephews and nieces.
