Clallam County PUD No. 1 recently has experienced multiple copper theft issues at its substations and other facilities.

Within the past two weeks, theft has been identified along Deer Park Road, at the Deer Park Substation and at the Agnew Substation just west of Sequim. 

“We need the public’s help in this matter," said Doug Nass, PUD general manager. "If you see anything suspicious or out of the ordinary around any utility facility, please do not hesitate to call the PUD or law enforcement.”

The items stolen are the “grounds.” The theft of grounds puts life and property at risk. It is also fatally dangerous for those who perpetrate the theft due to electric shock hazard and it puts PUD crews at risk because protection is compromised.

“The fact of the matter is that the repair and replacement of the grounds is expensive and time consuming and has a direct impact on customer rates,” Nass said. “Most important, though, it is a safety issue for the public and the PUD crews.”

The PUD has notified local law enforcement of the thefts and an investigation is ongoing. The PUD also is working to mitigate future theft opportunities, though specific measures will not be disclosed.
