Two Serenity House Thrift Store shoppers added to their pocketbooks by luck of the draw. Sequim residents Kathleen Hennen-Vietz and Jeff Nugent each won $250 Visa gift cards for shopping at the Port Angeles, 502 E. First St., and Sequim, 215 N. Sequim Ave., thrift stores.

Serenity House was promoting its Sunday opening with giveaways at its two stores. The stores added the seventh day opening on June 14. They now are open 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Sundays.

Hennen-Vietz’s name was drawn in Port Angeles and Nugent’s in Sequim.

Nugent said the Sunday hours have allowed him the opportunity to shop there.

He’s not sure what he will buy with the money but said if he were to spend it at the store, it would go toward jewelry.

Brad Collins, deputy director for Serenity House, said "Sunday has worked out well for us."

"Our customers are very appreciative of the chance to shop and to donate every day of the week," said Evelyn Barnes, Sequim store manager.

Collins said both branches now have volunteer positions available on Sundays.

In addition to being open seven days a week, both thrift stores have planned expansions.

The Sequim store has obtained permits to expand on the south side of the store, but Collins said they are securing all money for the project before proceeding.

Port Angeles’ store will be adding to its patio area.

The stores help support Serenity House of Clallam County, a nonprofit agency serving local people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.

The stores generated more than 20 percent of the revenue needed to support agency services to more than 3,600 individuals during 2008.
