Building bridges. Eggs falling from the sky. Rovers on Mars. Students have had their hands full with challenges with the Sequim Education Foundation’s Engineering Challenge in recent years.

This year, the foundation is taking a slightly different tack with the 2014 Exploring Engineering Day, set for Saturday, June 7, at Helen Haller Elementary School, 350 W. Fir St.

Youths in elementary grades (kindergarten-fifth) are invited to participate in activities from the PBS show, “Design Squad Nation.” More than a dozen teachers from Helen Haller and Greywolf elementary schools and Sequim Middle School will be on hand to lead students in two activities, one from 10-11 a.m. and a second activity from 11 a.m.-noon.

“They are all fun, have more than one solution and put the focus on the investigative process,” said event co-organizer Jodi Olson.

With 225 students from both elementary schools already signed up, event organizers expect to have about 17 students in each classroom. All activities are “problem solving” with an “engineering focus,” said Dave Hasenpflug, Helen Haller science teacher. “Should be lots of fun.”
