Sequim Rotarians cook up 51st fundraiser

For the 51st time, local Rotarians offered up some authentic Pacific Northwest cuisine for good causes.

The Rotary Club of Sequim held its annual Salmon Bake Sunday, Aug 11, with a healthy turnout midway through the event.

“We had people lined up at 11:15 (a.m.) for a noon event,” Rotarian Vicky Blakesley said.

She said the bake raises between $6,000 and $8,000, and that they were aiming for the higher end this year. (Fundraiser totals were not available at press time.)

The event, the club’s biggest fundraiser of the year, helps fund local programs such as the Adaptive Bike Program, where Rotarians work with Sequim School District physical therapist Cherry Bibler to help youths with special needs become more mobile and grow, and the 18-year-old Harry Hughes Memorial Dictionary Project — one that now provides digital learning aids for students with help from the Sequim Education Foundation.

In all, Blakesley said the club served 459 meals of salmon, 45 of pulled pork and 11 hot dog meals.

“Most of the youth who attended went for the grilled salmon, just like a true Pacific Northwesterner,” Blakesley said.

The Rotary Club of Sequim meets at 11:45 a.m. Thursdays at Baja Cantina Restaurant, 531 W. Washington St. Blakesley said the group now has two regular members who, because they are unable to attend meetings, take part via computer.

“(That was) to encourage younger members,” she said. “We want to grow. They’re fun meetings (with) lots of camaraderie.”
