Sequim schools have events planned beginning in early August through early September to help families prepare for returning to school.

A kick-off event for collecting donated school supplies took place on Aug. 2 at the Sequim Walmart. Donations of school supplies may be dropped off at the district office at 503 N. Sequim Ave., open from 8 a.m.-3 p.m., Monday-Friday (closed from noon-1 p.m. for lunch). Donated supplies will be made available to families in need at the Back to School fair (see below).

The school also district will have a booth at the Clallam County Fair, Aug. 14-17. Registration packets and other district information will be available. A Sequim School District bus will be parked on display near the booth.

At Sequim High

Sequim High School’s office re-opened Aug. 11 and is open weekdays, 8 a.m.-3 p.m. (closed from noon-1 p.m. for lunch).

SHS Wolf Pack Days are Aug. 21-22 on the high school campus, 601 N. Sequim Ave. On Aug. 21, juniors and seniors can drop in anytime between 8-11 a.m., sophomores from noon-3 p.m. On Aug. 22, freshmen with a last name beginning with the letters A-K may drop in anytime between 8-11 a.m., and with last names L-Z between noon-3 p.m.

At Wolf Pack Days, students pick up class schedules and have individual school pictures taken, as well as pay for an ASB card, annual, P.E. uniform and campus permits. Information about classes and fees may be found on the school website under “Counseling” at www.sequim.k12.wa.us/Page/490.

New student orientation is Aug. 19 at 9 a.m. in the high school library. Parents are encouraged to attend with their students.

SHS Band Camp is Aug. 26 from 3-5 p.m. (freshmen arrive at 2:30 p.m.), and Aug. 27 from 9 a.m.-noon, in the high school band room in the Sequim Community School gym building. Freshmen orientation is from 9 a.m.-1 p.m., Sept. 2, in the SHS gym.

Link Crew Day is from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on Sept. 2.

For high school students planning to play sports, sports physicals are available at the Boys & Girls Club in Sequim on Aug. 16 from 9-11 a.m. for $20 and are good for two years.

The deadline for fall sports forms to be turned in at the high school office is Aug. 19.

High school football begins on Aug. 20, while all other fall sports begin Aug. 25. The first varsity football home game is Sept. 5 when the Sequim High Wolves host Chimacum.

For the Timberwolves

The Sequim Middle School office re-opens from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. (closed from noon-1 p.m. for lunch) on Aug. 18. At 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 18, the school hosts a new student orientation the gym.

Sequim Middle School’s Timberwolf Days are Aug. 19-20 at the middle school campus. On Aug. 19, students with a last name beginning with the letters A-K may drop in anytime between 2:30-6:30 p.m. On Aug. 20, students with a last name beginning with the letters L-Z may drop in anytime between 2:30-6:30 p.m.

At that time, students can pick up their class schedules and pay applicable class fees. They can purchase an ASB card, yearbook and P.E. uniform, pay money on lunch accounts and have individual school pictures taken.

On Sept. 2, Sequim Middle School hosts the WEB (Where Everybody Belongs) event for incoming sixth-graders from 7:50 a.m.-noon. The WEB program is designed to ease the transition from elementary school to middle school.

For band students, parents may arrange to rent band instruments on Sept. 4 from 3-6 p.m.

Immunizations are available at the Clallam County Health Department in Port Angeles. Tdap vaccine for tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis is required for all incoming sixth-graders through 11th grade. This is the booster shot that protects against whooping cough (pertussis), which was at epidemic proportions in Washington in 2012. The meningococcal vaccine is recommended but not required.

At the elementarys

Helen Haller Elementary School’s office re-opens on Aug. 20 and Greywolf Elementary School’s office opens on Aug. 25, both from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. (closed from noon-1 p.m. for lunch).

Greywolf and Helen Haller staffers are planning open houses from 4-6 p.m. on Sept. 2 at both schools. This

is an opportunity for new families to become familiarized with the buildings. Students may find their classroom, meet their teachers and greet classmates as well as drop off school supplies.

At Greywolf, members of the PTA (Parent Teacher Association) will be present to answer questions and talk about parent involvement.

Haller PTO (Parent Teacher Organization) will provide popsicles to sweeten the transition from summer break to back to school. First-grade teacher Ione Marcy said, “It’s an opportunity for parents and children to meet their teachers, and this will help children to feel more relaxed about the first day of school.”

Get ‘Back’

The Back to School Fair is from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, at the Boys & Girls Club, 400 N. Fir St. There will be car seat checks, fire trucks, fun activities, face painting, free food and free books. Information about family resources and children’s activities will be available.

A BLOCKFest event will take place during this time at the Helen Haller Elementary gym. BLOCKFest is an interactive math, science and literacy event for parents and their children ages 8 months to 8 years. For more information about BLOCKFest, contact administrative assistant Marilyn Walsh at 582-3262. There is no admission fee for this event.

The third annual Back2School 2-Mile Family Fun Run/Walk, an event for the entire family, is Saturday, Sept. 6, at the SHS stadium. The race course includes fun obstacles and prizes. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the race starts at 9 a.m. This event is sponsored by the Sequim School District, Sequim Education Foundation Sequim Boys & Girls Club and Anytime Fitness. Stuart Marcy, run chairman and Sequim High School teacher, said, ”We’re hoping lots of families will bring their kids and come out to the track for this event. It will be a lot of fun.”

First day and OPA

The first day of school for all schools except Olympic Peninsula Academy is Sept. 3. Helen Haller Elementary, Sequim Middle School,

Sequim High School begin at 8:15 a.m. Greywolf Elementary begins at 8:30 a.m.

Olympic Peninsula Academy’s office re-opens Aug. 28 and Otter Day is on Sept. 4 from 10:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. This event is a required orientation for parents and students. The first day of class for OPA is Sept. 8 beginning at 8:10 a.m.
