Seniors versus seniors: Peninsula Senior Games kick off Aug. 22

Take a spin, make a splash, aim for a strike or simply run your heart out. The only qualification to play? Life experience.

Take a spin, make a splash, aim for a strike or simply run your heart out. The only qualification to play? Life experience.

Though it’s named the Olympic Peninsula Senior Games, this annual event invites folks of ages 50 and above from near and far to challenge each other in a number of physical or mental contests in a number of locations across the peninsula, from Sequim to Port Angeles to as far east as U.S. Highway 101 and O’Brien Road (cycling).

Participants may enter as many events as they like but should pay attention to the master schedule (see below) in case some of those events take place at the same time.

There are two types of costs: registration fees and sports fees. The $20 registration fee helps offset administrative expenses such as T-shirts, food, programs, medals, emergency medical personnel and equipment and printed materials. The sports fee is $5 for each event entered with the exception of bowling ($10; also, the cost of bowling practice on Friday ($1.75) is payable directly to Laurel Lanes).

Early registration for events closed Aug. 8; registration after the deadline is at the discretion of the commissioner for that sport and late registrants are not guaranteed a T-shirt.

Rules to play

All athletes must be at least 50 years old by Dec. 31. In those events with doubles divisions, age groups are determined by the age of the younger partner as of Dec. 31. Photo ID showing date of birth may be required at check-in. Individual age groups are: 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84, 85-89, 90-94, 95-99 and 100+. If there is only one competitor in an age group, that person will compete in the nearest age group, but will be awarded a medal in the age appropriate group.

At the end of Senior Games, results are posted at Port Angeles Senior Center, the games headquarters, 328 E. Seventh St., and on the Olympic Peninsula Senior Games website, olympicpeninsulaseniorgames.com.

All participants are responsible for their personal equipment used in the events. Also, insurance is the responsibility of each participant. Each athlete should have proof of insurance with them in case of an emergency, injury or illness.

Also, no recent pros allowed: Any person that has competed at professional level in any event must have been retired from professional competition for at least 20 years in order to be eligible to compete in that event.

Professional athletes retired for less than 20 years may participate in any event other than the one or ones in which they competed professionally.
