Tugboat runs aground, refloated near Port Townsend

After running aground at about 12:30 this morning, Sept. 26, the tugboat Shannon was safely refloated at 7 a.m. and transited to Port Townsend where it is moored.

U.S. Coast Guard inspectors are on board investigating the cause of the grounding. No injuries damage or pollution have been reported.

The Washington Department of Ecology and U.S. Coast Guard had been monitoring the tugboat not long after it went aground early this morning at Cape George Beach in the Straits of Juan de Fuca north of Port Townsend.

The tug reportedly had two crew members aboard and was carrying 4,800 gallons of diesel fuel. The tug was towing a barge of paper products and remains attached to a barge. The barge never went aground and the tug Reliable from Port Gamble is en route to take control of the barge.

 

No injuries, damage or pollution were reported.

 

The cause of the grounding in unknown at this time, the Coast Guard is investigating the incident.
