Sarge’s Place is purchasing the house and land across the street for housing veterans that need some assisted care.

There will be an organic garden, woodshop and firewood cutting as job creation and training for the veterans. Money is needed for closing costs, repair and fix up to purchase furniture and prepare the land.

If you would like to donate, contact Cheri Tinker at ct.sargesplace@gmail.com. We want to thank all who have donated hotel-sized personal care items for the veterans living in Sarge’s Place. Wonderful!

The Stand Down for Forks will be from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Thursday, May 7, at the Elks Lodge. Help is needed on May 6 for set up and on the day of to assist veterans and to take down. If you have questions about this or want to volunteer, call me at 683-6419 or e-mail me at cdrlgilchrist@gmail.com.

I also am collecting full-size personal care items. I really need deodorant, toothpaste and toothbrushes, wash cloths and pet food. I will be glad to pick up and take the items with me to Forks. A big thank you to St. Luke’s Episcopal Church for its donation to pay for storage unit costs.

Seeking new members

The Olympic Peninsula Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) is seeking new members. Any individual who has held status as a commissioned or warrant officer in any of the five uniformed services, the U.S. Public Health Service or National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration and their surviving spouse is eligible for membership.

The Olympic Peninsula Chapter meets bimonthly in general meeting luncheons. The chapter hosts an August picnic, Christmas gathering and a “field trip” in June. This year that trip tentatively is set up as a tour of the PBY aircraft museum on Whidbey Island.

The next meeting of the chapter will be April 25 at Traylor’s in Port Angeles. Call me at 683-6419 or the president, Steve, at 477-2913 if you have questions or want to make reservations.

MOAA is a congressionally chartered veterans service organization whose mission is to lobby Congress and advocate at the state and local levels for programs and legislation to ensure that those who serve and those who have served honorably are treated and cared for fairly and that retirees are able to retain a basic quality of life consistent with the sacrifices they have made.

Please consider joining us, we need you.
