Wolves race to easy win vs. Knights, Redskins

For Sequim runners, this was one version of a training run.

With a number of important meets coming up on the season schedule, Sequim cross country coach Harold Huff had a simple message on his lips before

Sequim took on Bremerton and Port Townsend last Thursday: Run well, run comfortable and don’t get hurt.

With that in mind, the Wolves still swept their Olympic League foes in both girls and boys races.

Sequim’s girls swept the first five spots while the boys showed impressive depth by taking places 5-10 as they topped P.T.’s Redskins and the host Knights Oct. 9.

Running well a week after her battle with Kingston’s Ruby and Marina Roberts, Sequim junior Alli Cutting raced to a 14:16 finish in the 2.4-mile course – a pace under six minutes per mile – giving her a one-minute, 16-second win ahead of teammate Laura Moser. Christina Bruce finished third while teammate Audrey Lichten, despite battling an illness, was fourth, and Sequim’s Zoei Zbaraschuk took fifth; all three runners within four seconds of each other.

Alyssa Stratton was seventh while Taylor Roads was eighth, nearly two and a-half minutes faster than last year’s race on the same course.

Cutting’s finish was 1:13 faster than last year’s race, helping Sequim’s girls outpace Olympic by 33 points.

"I’m liking what I’m seeing – they trained hard, they ran fast in spite of (hard training)," Huff said.

On the boys’ side, Kenny Russell led a pack of Wolves with a fifth-place finish at 12:18, behind Olympic’s John Wojtech (12:17), P.T.’s Quinton Decker (12:18) and Bereket Piatt (12:33) and Olympic’s Brenden Schruhl (12:42).

Still, with Sequim runners flooding the top 10, the Wolves won the team scoring with 35 points, 10 ahead of Olympic and 14 ahead of Port Townsend.

Sequim’s Ben Ohnstad was sixth at 12:52 while teammate Colby Robb finished strong in seventh (13:26). Tyler Wilson-Walters (eighth, 13:32), Alex Jenkins (ninth, 13:41) and Ricky Amundson, who ran his first varsity race last week, and placed 10th with a 13:46 mark, rounded out Sequim’s top finishers.

"We’ll continue to train hard this week, then really put them in a taper mode for league," Huff said.

Sequim has one more league meet, slated for Oct. 15 at Robin Hill Farm Park against North Mason and Port Angeles, before the Oct. 23 meet at The Cedars at Dungeness golf course. Sequim needs to finish in the top three in team standings at the district meet Nov. 1 in Tacoma to advance to the state 2A final.
