Tommy Olav Svege passed away peacefully on October 20th, 2023 at the age of 89 surrounded by his loving family. Tom was born on July 3rd, 1934 to Amanda and Ingvald Svege in Flekkefjord, Norway. When Tom was 18 years old he had a dream to move to America for a short term stay, have an adventure and purchase an American car. Even at that age, Tom had a passion for living his life to the fullest.

Tom began his journey in Brooklyn, New York. Based on his training as a Norwegian carpenter he was accepted as a union carpenter in the state of New York. Tom lived with an aunt and uncle of his Norwegian friend. It was there, along with his job, that he learned the English language. He brought his Norwegian skis and loved skiing in the United States. He joined a ski club in New Jersey where he met the love of his life, Pat.

In 1976, Tom and Pat moved to the Seattle area where they married and raised a son, Erik and a daughter, Shannon. Tom continued working as a carpenter. Hard work was important and he took great pride in his workmanship and providing for his family.

Tom loved the outdoors and wonderful memories were created with family and friends camping, hiking and especially skiing the slopes in the Pacific Northwest.

He also had a strong faith and was involved in his church in Kirkland, WA. Tom was known for gathering coats from fellow church members and passing them out to the homeless in Downtown Seattle every Christmas Day.

In 2007, Tom and his wife retired to Sequim, WA. He joined a local church and continued with his fellowship with God. Tom also loved going down to the beach for walks along the sand and was also known for his year round “dips” in the cold Puget Sound.

Tom exuded compassion and joy for life. Everyone that met him instantly loved him and his life will be remembered by all those who knew him.

His legacy will live on through his loving wife, Pat, of 47 years, along with his children Kristin, Karin, Erik and Shannon.

Peggy Walter Smith, long time Sequim resident, died peacefully surrounded by family on October 6th at the age of 92 after a long battle with dementia.

Born in Virginia, Peggy spent her childhood on military bases, moving frequently. She met her beloved husband, Otis Leroy Walter while attending Northwestern University as an undergraduate. Together they had four children, and lived in Palo Alto, CA before returning to Evanston, IL where Walter served as Dean of Men at Northwestern University, until his passing in 1966.

Peggy went on to receive her Master’s degree in education at Northwestern University and to work as Associate Director of Admissions at Northwestern University, a role she loved and that took her across the country. In 1973 she married Edward Smith, and together they moved to Sequim, WA. She became very active in the community, serving as a member of the local P.E.O. chapter supporting educational opportunities for women, as a devoted member of the St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, and as a supporter of the Port Angeles Symphony. She also owned and operated Foxgloves & Smith, a gift shop in downtown Sequim, a local favorite for over ten years.

Peggy will be remembered for her vivacious spirit, compassion, grace, and ability to be a shining light in every room. A talented classical pianist, Peggy instilled in her children and grandchildren an appreciation and love for music and dance. Peggy always made the best of every situation, marching through life with strength and perseverance. Even in her final years, her gregarious nature, charm, and delightful sense of humor won the hearts of those who cared for her. She adored and loved her family above all else.

She is preceded in death by her son Samuel Walter, and survived by her children Kathryn Walter, Mary Marcial and husband Narciso, and Joseph Walter and wife Lisa; five grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and many dear friends.

A memorial in her memory will be held in Port Angeles, WA in summer 2024. Memorial contributions can be sent in her honor to P.E.O. International (https://donations.peointernational.org/) or to the Alzheimer’s Association (https://www.alz.org/get-involved-now/donate).
