Nicholas Surrey Garland
September 30, 1949 – July 13, 2023
Nicholas S. Garland was born in Oceanside, California in 1949. He grew up in Carlsbad, California and attended the Army and Navy Academy. In 1966 he played varsity football and graduated from La Jolla Country Day School in 1968. Nick enjoyed surfing and had a passion for growing plants, which led to work in several nurseries in southern and northern CA. In 1981 he traveled the world with his parents before moving from California to Sequim, WA. Nick worked as a lifeguard at the Sequim Aquatic Recreation Center and later worked for a large retailer, which he retired from in 2018 after 20 years of service.
Nick was a long-standing member of the Clallam County Gem and Mineral Association and as a collector he participated in the rock and gem shows. He enjoyed cutting and polishing stones and he loved the colors that were revealed when he cut open rock slabs, which he also was learning to make into jewelry pendants. His dream was to learn how to facet stones, but his health began to fail before he could realize his dream.
Sometimes when Nick first introduced himself he would say, “My name is Nicholas Garland. I’m like a double Christmas! I’m a Saint Nick and I’m also a Christmas Garland!”
One of his favorite scriptures was Joshua 1:9; “The Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
Nick’s broad smile reflected his love for his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, who would now say to Nick, “Welcome home!”
Nick was proceeded in death by his parents, Robert D. “Buzz” Garland in 2006 and his mother Diana Butler Garland in 2016. He is survived by his wife Tammara Garland, his sister, Gay Garland Reed, nephew Jeffrey C. Reed and niece Heather K. Reed and great niece Alice G. Reed.
Deanna ‘Dee’ L. Groves
Deanna ‘Dee’ L. Groves of Port Angeles died of respiratory failure on Sept. 16, 2023.
She was 71. Groves was born Sept. 18, 1951.
A private family service will be held.

Donald Arthur Edwards
Donald Arthur Edwards of Port Angeles died of age-related causes on Sept. 15, 2023.
He was 79.
Edwards was born May 7, 1944.
A celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21, at the Clallam County Fairgrounds.
