Parenting in Focus: It’s never too late to make a New Year’s resolution that really matters

It’s never too late to make a New Year’s resolution. In fact, there’s something energizing about resolutions, whether made in January or July. They’re simply another way we set goals for ourselves. The biggest problem is that we tend to forget them. Fortunately, that part can be fixed.

Let’s start with what makes a good resolution.

Make it doable

Set goals you can actually accomplish. “Be a better parent” is vague, but “spend 10 minutes after school talking with my child over a snack” is specific and achievable. Instead of “get in shape,” try “walk three times a week.” Small, concrete steps add up over time.

Believe in it

Don’t waste energy on goals you don’t truly value. If you love your favorite show, don’t swear off all television — just set limits. If you want a closer relationship with your parents, decide exactly how often you’ll call or visit. Meaningful goals stick because they matter to you.

Share your goals

There’s power in telling someone what you’re trying to accomplish. When others know, you’re more likely to follow through. If your resolution is to check your child’s homework daily, tell your child; that reminder may help you stay consistent.

Write it down

Resolutions are easy to forget if they stay in your head. Put them on paper — or on your mirror, fridge, or desk — where you’ll see them often. Writing also forces you to clarify what success looks like.

Keep it simple

Don’t overload yourself. One or two well-chosen resolutions will go much further than a dozen vague ones. Focus helps you succeed.

Expect to stumble

Change is tough. If you slip, don’t give up — adjust and try again. Progress rarely happens in a straight line.

Celebrate success

When you reach your goal, acknowledge it! Tell someone, toast yourself, or find a small way to reward the effort you put in.

With all this advice, I’ve inspired myself, too. My resolution: to turn this column in to the Gazette on time — maybe even a week early this year. And now that you all know, I have no choice but to keep it!
