After posting three big wins against squads at the Seaside Classic in late January, Avalanche Black 7th’s foe for the tournament final never showed, giving the Olympic Peninsula-based select girls basketball squad another winning weekend.

The Avalanche outscored their trio of opponents 143-33 en route to the win in Seaside, Ore., on Jan. 30-31 — their 12th championship as a team and the organization’s 21st title.

In game one, the Avalanche blew out Enumclaw 54-3, with Jaida Wood tallying 12 points and eight rebounds to lead the way. Ruth Moss had 11 points, Hannah Reetz had 10 and Sequim’s own Kalli Wiker added eight points and four rebounds.

In game two, the Avalanche got their toughest test but outlasted Lakeridge of Oswego, Ore., 35-21. Wiker led the squad with 11 points, five rebounds and three steals.

“Kalli was outstanding for us this weekend,” Avalanche coach Joe Marvelle said.

“We had a tough game against Lake Oswego on Saturday night. Kalli just came up huge with three big 3-pointers that helped us break open a very close game. (She) brought us great energy and hustle from end to end all weekend long. Sequim High School has a great player to look forward to there.”

In the third game, the Avalanche’s foe from Wilson, Ore., was no match in a 54-9 decision. Reetz and Wood had 13 points each to lead the scoring, while Wiker added nine points and six rebounds.

The Avalanche was scheduled to play a team from Oregon in the final but, as Marvelle noted, “They apparently decided they didn’t want to play us after watching us play last night.”
