Boys swimming: SHS team tentatively a go this winter

Sequim girls bowling team could commute with swimmers to Port Angeles

Sequim High School administrators told boys swim team coaches last week that despite SARC closing on Oct. 30, the boys team still could compete this winter.

Athletic director Dave Ditlefsen said they intend to support a boys team and bus them to Port Angeles’ William Shore Memorial Pool but they must have at least 10 swimmers.

He said 10 players constitutes a coach’s contract and his early estimate is that the extra busing will cost the Sequim School District about $4,000 more this season.

The district has agreed in principle with organizers of the PA pool to use their facility.

“We still have a lot of details to work out,” Ditlefsen said.

Some of those include scheduling at the pool and a busing schedule.

Ditlefsen said the scenario is similar to the Sequim girls bowling team who had to be bused to Laurel Lanes in Port Angeles after Sequim’s Olympic Lanes closed in 2014.

This year, they’ll be bused for practices on Mondays and for various matches on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Depending on turnout for both teams, they’ll tentatively carpool on Mondays to Port Angeles, Ditlefsen said.

The bowling team’s season started on Nov. 2.

Mark Pincikowski, assistant swimming coach, said he and head coach Linda Moats assumed there wasn’t going to be a team due to SARC’s situation until they heard from Ditlefsen last week.

Last year, they had 15 boys at one point on the team but six boys quit after learning there weren’t enough swimmers/divers for a dive team. At least 18 swimmers and/or divers must sign up for the team for Pincikowski to serve as the dive coach.

The girls team had more than 18 swimmers but did not have a dive team this year due to other factors, Pincikowski said.

As for sign-ups, Ditlefsen said there’s always room for more on the swim and bowling teams.
