Boys tennis: Five Wolves ready for league meet

The Sequim Wolves boys tennis team plans to send its top singles and two doubles teams to the Olympic League Meet this week.

No. 1 singles player Matthew Richards, a senior, No. 1 doubles team Justin Porter and Stephen Prorok and No. 2 doubles team Blake Wiker and Dillon Liebert will vie on Oct. 21-22, at North Kitsap High School in Poulsbo, for open spots to districts.

Head coach Justine Wagner said because of Sequim’s team standing (3-9 in the Olympic League, 5-10 overall) they only were able to send two sets of players/teams.

Following a league meeting on Oct. 19, Richards was awarded a No. 3 seed and plays Cutter Bedford of Bremerton, while Porter and Prorok take a No. 5 seed and will play Tyler Aerne and Logan Peck of Olympic High School. Leibert and Wiker were seeded 13th and play Robby Henshaw and Nate McCown of North Kitsap.

The Wolves finished their season last week with two losses in a row — 7-0 to North Kitsap (12-0, 14-0) and 6-1 to Olympic (8-3, 11-3) on Oct. 14.

Sequim’s No. 3 doubles team Casey Chapman and Logan Habner recorded the only win against Olympic on the day going 6-4, 6-2. No. 3 singles player Raymond Lam, No. 1 doubles and No. 2 doubles teams Porter and Prorok, and Liebert and Wiker lost in three sets each.

Wagner said the boys showed a lot of improvement as the season went along.

“It started out pretty rough as they lost a lot of their first rounds but the second go around it’s gotten a lot better,” she said.

Despite going 3-9 in league play, the Wolves won two of those in the last four matches of the year with a 5-2 home win on Oct. 9, over Port Angeles and 4-3 win in Coupeville on Oct. 12. Sequim lost both match-ups earlier in the season.

“We’re improving,” Wagner said. “With such a young group all I can ask for is improvement.”
