Success on the tennis court seems to run in the family.

That bodes well for the 2013 Sequim Wolves.

With her father, Mark Textor, on a one-year leave from teaching and coaching Sequim High’s tennis squads, first-year coach Justine Wagner aims to lead the Wolves to another Olympic League title.

“I’m ready for it,” Wagner says. “I’m glad I got to be an assistant under my dad; he’s the greatest.”

Textor led the Wolves to an 8-0 league mark and 11-2 overall record in 2012, and many of the pieces from that league title team are in place this fall.

Top players figure to be Isaiah Dewan, Matthew Richards and Victor Lam, with several athletes competing for varsity spots not far behind, Wagner says.

Dewan was 10-0 as a singles player and took fifth in the Olympic League tournament while Richards teamed with Brandon Payne to go 4-1 in the regular season and take fourth at league. Wagner says freshman Steven Prorok should bolster the team as well.

Sequim had narrow (4-3) victories against Port Angeles, Klahowya and Kingston and a 5-2 win against North Kitsap. Wagner figures those teams will give Sequim the biggest challenges in 2013.

The Wolves struggled to advance players in the postseason, and are aiming to send a play back to state for the first time since 2010-11.

“I think they have the potential to win league,” Wagner says of her Wolves. “This group of boys is very competitive. As for districts and beyond, I’m not sure.”
