The way Port Angeles senior Lauren Lunt was shooting, few teams in the Olympic League were going to upset the Roughriders on Friday night.

The Riders rode their 1-3-1 zone and Lunt’s sharp eye to a 42-23 victory Jan. 27 against rival Sequim.

“We got caught in that (zone),” Sequim coach Larry Brown said. “We can do it — we have the players to do it — (but) unfortunately we had a couple of those shots we didn’t make.”

What was a six-point PA second quarter lead turned quickly into a rout. Freshman guard Mikkiah Brady sank a 3-pointer to give PA a 25-16 lead at halftime and Lunt followed with a trio of long-range jumpers early in the third quarter to put the Riders up 36-18.

“Their coach (Mike Poindexter) is a great coach and they have some tough, talented girls,” Brown said.

Lunt finished with 19 points, including five 3-pointers, while Cheyanne Wheeler added 10 points and five rebounds. The Roughriders forced 28 Wolves turnovers.

Ella Christiansen led the Wolves with 10 points, seven rebounds, two blocks and two assists. Adrienne Haggerty had six points and a team-high four steals, and Jessica Dietzman added seven points.

Sequim was slated to play at Coupeville on Jan. 30 and league cellar-dweller North Mason on Jan. 31 — results of both games were not available for this section’s press time.

The Wolves host the 1A Coupeville Wolves squad on Feb. 2; varsity game time is 3:30 p.m, followed by the varsity boys match-up.

Tuesday’s North Mason matchup is key; with a win and a Kingston loss later in the week — the Bucs play Port Angeles on Feb. 2 — Sequim could wind up in a two- or three-way tie (along with Bremerton) for the Olympic League’s fourth and final district playoff spot.

The West Central District playoffs are set for Feb. 9-18.

Wolves beat Kingston’s Buccaneers at home

A solid start on the defensive end helped Sequim dispatch a five-game losing streak against the Kingston Buccaneers on Jan. 24.

Haggerty had a game-high 18 points and Christiansen added nine as the Wolves knocked off the visiting Buccaneers 44-32, to remain in the hunt for a district tournament playoff spot.

Dietzman, Madison Green and Bobbi Sparks added five points each for Sequim.
