Energy and hard work on the boards helped Sequim overcome some cold shooting from the field in a 68-49 win at North Mason on Jan. 2.
“We didn’t shoot the ball very well tonight but the girls worked hard,” Sequim coach Joclin Julmist said. “We have to keep working on the fundamentals like passing and free throws and rebounding.”
Jolene Vaara paced the team with 20 points, five assists and eight steals.
Bobbi Mixon sank a pair of 3-pointers and had 14 points, six rebounds and six assists.
“Bobbi was really good again,” Julmist said. “(She’s been) playing some good defense she’s been getting better every game.”
Dani Herman had a double-double with 10 points and a team-high 12 rebounds. Point guard Gracie Chartraw had 12 points despite an off night (4-for-26) from the field.
“She played really good defense and had six steals,” Julmist said.
Libby Turella also had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds to go with four assists and two blocked shots.
“(She) was all over the place once again,” Julmist said of Turella.
Sequim had 28 steals and out-rebounded North Mason 44-37, with 23 of those caroms coming on the offensive glass.
SHS bests Bucs
In the first of five consecutive home games, Sequim raced to a 24-2 lead after one quarter and held off a Kingston comeback to win, 51-41.
“We have to work on finishing games and to play as a unit,” Julmist said.
Chartraw led the team with 18 points, seven steals and five rebounds.
“She works really hard for us,” Julmist said.
Vaara had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Herman chipped in eight points and 13 rebounds. Turella had six points and four rebounds, and Mixon added five points and seven rebounds.
Coming up
Sequim (4-1 in Olympic League, 6-2 overall) was slated to host Olympic on Jan. 9 — results were not available at press time.
The Wolves host rival Port Angeles in a girls-boys varsity double-header on Jan. 11. The boys play at 5:15 p.m., followed by the girls at about 7 p.m.
Sequim them hosts Bainbridge on Jan. 16 and Bremerton on Jan. 19.
