Girls soccer: Wolves shut out Knights

A stout defense and opportunistic attack led by Jennyfer Gomez and Taryn Johnson helped Sequim to a 4-0 shutout of the visiting Bremerton Knights on Sept. 29.

Gomez scored in the first half and came within inches of a second, and Johnson had a goal and two assists in the shutout for the Wolves (3-2).

“It feels good to get a ‘W’ especially in front of the home crowd,” Sequim coach Ken Garling said.

“[I liked] their passing and staying composed as a unit,” he said. “[If we] stay connected, good things happened.”

Johnson opened the scoring at the eight minute, finding the net after a ball glanced off a Knight defender.

“That got us going,” Garling said.

In the 32nd minute, Johnson then found Gomez with a crossing pass from the right side for a 2-0 lead.

Gomez helped the Wolves dominate the midfield possessions.

“She’s relentless,” Garling said.

Five minutes later, Johnson took a free kick that teammate Eve Breithaupt one-timed for a 3-0 Sequim lead.

Teagen Moore sliced through the Bremerton defense at the 60-minute mark for a goal and the second half’s only score.

Garling praised Sequim’s defenders for stymieing the Knights all evening.

“It’s really hard to get through those [backs],” he said.

Spartans prevail

The Wolves couldn’t keep pace with the Spartans on the scoreboard in an Olympic League road loss on Sept. 27.

“I thought we played well, we dominated possession, we created chances but couldn’t score,” Garling said.

First-place Bainbridge notched goals in the 14th minute and 30th minute for a 2-0 halftime lead.

“Their first goal came off the side of the foot of Bainbridge player, just got enough on it, a bit flukey, but good teams make the most of their chances,” Garling said.

Bainbridge also earned a penalty-kick goal and found the net in the final minutes.

“We kept creating chances and were moving the ball well, but Bainbridge really was solid at moving the ball from outside to inside and back out quickly,” Garling said. “And good teams can catch you out of position.”

Garling did have praise for his players.

“Jenny Gomez had an incredible game for us; she was on fire both halves,” Garling said. “Libby Turella as our defensive midfielder had another good game.

“And Ivy Barrett played well again. She continually stopped their strong striker and was able to hold her down much of the night.”
