Girls swim: Seven girls slated for state swim meet

The Lady Wolves will send seven swimmers to the 2A state meet on Nov. 11-12 at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.

Teammates Isa Benitez, Joie Darminio, Sonja Govertsen, Jasmine Itti, Sydnee Linnane, Anna Miehe and Meguire Vander Velde qualified at Lindbergh High School last weekend and helped Sequim finish eighth overall with 60 points. Port Angeles took first with 319 points.

Govertsen took sixth in the 50 yard freestyle with a 26.92-second finals time to earn a state berth and Vander Velde earned a wild card spot into state in the 500 freestyle after finishing eighth (6:05.14).

Two relay teams swimming at state consist of the same swimmers. The 200 medley relay of Linnane, Miehe, Govertsen and Itti placed sixth (2:06.23 finals) and they placed fifth (1:49.89) in the 200 freestyle relay after moving up a spot from the preliminaries.

The 400 free relay team of Itti, Benitez, Darminio and Vander Velde placed 12th at 4:19.03 and later earned a state spot, too.

Other individual swimmers participating included Miehe placing ninth (1:19.27) in the 100 breaststroke and 11th (2:32.15) in the 200 IM. Linnane placed 16th (27.66) in the 50 free and 18th (1:15.10) in the 100 backstroke. Darminio just missed the finals in the 100 butterfly taking 15th (1:12.32) while Govertsen placed 16th (1:12.49) and Jaycee Thompson-Porrazzo 20th (1:19.83).

In the 200 yard free, Vander Velde placed 16th (2:19.89), Benitez 18th (2:21.13), and Darminio 22nd (2:25.34).

Itti took 17th (27.68) in the 50 free and Sydney Swanson placed 22nd (2:45.31) and Thompson-Porrazzo 23rd (2:52.36) in the 200 IM.
