Girls tennis: Wolves rack up five wins before spring break

Sequim’s SHS girls tennis squad opened with five wins in eight matches, falling only to Olympic League powerhouses North Kitsap and Bainbridge (twice).

The Wolves opened the season with a 5-2 win at Bremerton on March 15, getting straight set singles victories from No. 2 Payton Smithson and No. 3 Kristine Prorok. The Wolves got a win in No. 1 doubles, with Sydney Hegtvedt and Danielle Herman topping the Knights’ Maisey Monroe and Ana Nunez, 6-0, and 6-1. Also earning wins were Taylor Heting and Kierra Morey at No. 3 doubles and Kendall Day and Sydney Thomas-Harris at No. 4 doubles.

Teegan DeVries topped Sequim’s Kendall Hastings 6-4, 6-2 in a match-up of state-caliber players (at last year’s 2A tourney, DeVires placed seventh and Hastings was eighth).

On March 17 in Sequim, 3A Bainbridge swept all but one match in a 6-1 victory with Hastings out-lasting Izzzy Wallin in three sets (6-4, 3-6,6-1) for the lone SHS victory.
