Golf: Four Wolves ready for state as three miss cut at districts

Balkan finishes 11th at districts, Arnold and Carter 18th and 22nd

Three Wolves looking for state berths missed the cutoff on Tuesday at the West Central District Tournament.

Junior Sydney Balkan finished 11th with a 104 (48, 56) over 18 holes on May 17 at Bremerton’s Gold Mountain Golf Club. She missed a girls’ alternate spot by four strokes and qualifying for state by six.

Balkan qualified for districts after shooting a 102 at the league tournament where she also placed 11th among 2A competitors.

Port Angeles’ Maddie Boe made the state cut earning the fifth qualifying spot shooting a 98 (49, 49).

For the boys, Sequim junior Jade Arnold and sophomore Josiah Carter finished 18th and 22nd with Arnold shooting 105 (52, 53) and Carter 109 (49, 60).

Carter earned a districts spot after just missing the state cutoff by one position at the league tournament, shooting an 82 to take sixth place among 2A competitors, while Arnold took seventh after shooting an 85.

The Wolves still send four golfers to state on May 24-25 with Jack Shea and Blake Wiker competing at Horn Rapids Golf Course in Richland and Alex McMenamin and Sarah Shea competing at the Columbia Point Golf Course, also in Richland.

The quartet earned automatic berths into the 2A boys and girls state golf championships at the league tournament.

Jack Shea and McMenamin both repeated as top finishers with this McMenamin’s third win.

Last year at state, Jack Shea tied for 10th and McMenamin tied for ninth. This is the first time at state for Sarah Shea and Blake Wiker, a freshman.
