Bike and run, run or simply enjoy the walk.
It’s up to you at the first Great Northwest Duathlon and 5K, slated for a 9 a.m. start time on Sunday, Aug. 14, at 72 Lotzgesell Road in Sequim.
The duathlon starts with a 5-kilometer on the Dungeness Recreational Area Road and trail, with the sights and sounds of the Strait of Juan De Fuca in the background. The event then transitions to a 21.6 mile-bike ride through out the edges of Sequim and Dungeness. The event finishes with another 5-kilometer run back to the start/finish line.
Those not up for a duathlon are invited to join races for a 5k run/walk for all ages and levels of ability on the same course as the duathlon course.
Cost for duathlon individuals is $65 until July 31 and $75 after July 31. (Duathlon team members are $35 per person prior to July 31, $40 per person after.
For the 5k run/walk, cost is $25 until July 31, $30 from Aug. 1 on. Youths of ages 16 and younger receive a $10 discount on the 5k entry.
All entries includes a commemorative shirt.
Kraig Kyllo, a Port Angeles runner/bicyclist, is the race director for the inaugural event.
He envisioned the event about 18 months ago as a triathlon and has been trying to figure out how to make it work in this area.
Kyllo said he mapped out events elsewhere such as at Lake Crescent but logistics for biking made the area unusable.
While watching the World Powerman Championships he learned of duathlons and felt it might be a better fit for the area. His goal is for around 30 people for the duathlon and 10 for the 5k.
Volunteers are needed, Kyllo says and he can be reached at kskyllo@yahoo.com or by calling 360-775-9213.
