Sequim’s top boy and girl golfers are also tops in the Olympic League.

Jack Shea and Alex McMenamin took first at the Olympic League Tournament on May 12 at The Cedars at Dungeness. Shea shot a 69 on 18 holes and McMenamin a 78.

The duo earned automatic state berths to the class 2A WIAA state championship at MeadowWood Golf Course on May 27-28 in Liberty Lake.

Sequim’s No. 2 boys golfer Travis Priest joins them after tying Bryce Kahle of Bremerton and Bryce Hoskinson of Olympic at 79. He went into a playoff on hole one and birdied it to win the the sixth and final seed into state.

Priest earned a state bid last year at districts by taking first at districts but he, Shea and Jesse Francis didn’t make the first-day cut at state.

Hoping to join them are five other Wolves who competed at the Western Central District III Golf Championship at Gold Mountain Golf Club on May 19 in Bremerton.

For the boys, Jade Arnold, who shot an 81 and tied for 11th at the league tournament, will compete with Alex McCracken who placed 13th shooting an 83. McCracken was first alternate from districts to state last year.

Sequim girls Kailee Price, Sarah Shea and Brianna Kettel earned district berths, too. Price and Shea tied for 13th at 98 and Kettel tied for 18th with a 100. In 2014, Kettel and Price made districts and Price was first alternate to state. The top three golfers at districts earn spots into state.

Last year, McMenamin placed third at state and earned Olympic League MVP. Kettel was named all-league along with Jack Shea.

To prepare for districts, Kettel and Price said they focused mostly on their short game of chipping and putting and the boys kept practices low key, too.

“(Districts) is just like any other match,” McCracken said.

On the season, Jack Shea led the boys with a 36.9-nine hole average followed by Priest at 39.5, McCracken at 42.2 and Arnold at 43.6.

McMenamin led the girls with a 39.4 nine-hole average followed by Sarah Shea at 50.2, Brianna Kettel at 50.6 and Price at 53.3 with Price and Shea not playing all matches on the varsity squad.

Look for updates on the districts and state competition soon.
