Prepping the fields

Field preparation began in January, with Little League families and Sequim Kiwanis Club volunteers performing an initial clean-up at the fields.

The Sequim Little League Board of Directors and family volunteers also have been working on field restoration and improvements.

“We are making extensive moves to make the fields at James Standard Park a safe and quality place to play,” Gary Abrams, field maintenance coordinator for the league, said.

Reseeding of the grass and adding new clay to the infields is underway right now. Sequim Little League officials credit Michael Snyder and his crew for volunteering time and expertise toward field restoration efforts.

In addition to field restoration projects, John Qualls of 360 Sports Performance Training has just stepped up as coaching coordinator for the league. His role is providing support and training to volunteer coaches in the league.

“The board is very excited about the 2016 season with the improvement of the playing fields and appointment of John Qualls as coaching coordinator,” league board president Tyler Sweet said. “Our goal is that Little Leaguers are provided with a fun and memorable experience through Sequim Little League.”

Funding the fun

Sequim Little League sees several returning sponsors and new sponsors as well. League officials aim to raise $5,000 through fundraisers this year to offset the cost of the program and field restoration.

The league also hosts a series of fundraisers and deals throughout the community to raise funds, including:

• a Dine-To-Donate event on April 16 where 10 percent of the ticket cost is donated to the league.

• a spaghetti feed held at Sunland Golf Course on April 29 (tickets are on sale now; see www.sequimlittleleague.com)

• proceeds from sales at Big 5 (171 Alley Road, Carlsborg) between now and mid-April benefit the league (must inform the salesperson about intent to support

• and all season, $5 raffle tickets will be sold for a Seattle getaway weekend, including Mariner game tickets and admission to fun family attractions; get tickets from board members at the park.

Seeking volunteers

As volunteers continue to prepare for the upcoming season, Sequim Little League is seeking knowledgeable volunteer umpires for games. Anyone who is willing to donate time as an umpire during the 2016 season should call umpire-in-chief Michael Stringer at 461-9516.
