SHS team hosts ‘Swim-A-Long’ fundraiser

Frustrated with an outdated and broken timing system they figure is not worth fixing,

Sequim High School’s swimmers are looking to upgrade.

On Oct. 21, the Wolves’ girls swim squad is hosting a "Swim-A-Long" fundraiser. Each team member agreed to find donors to sponsor them; swimmers are to swim as many laps as they can, with sponsors donating a certain amount each lap. A team of independent observers certifies the number of laps each girl swims.

Linda Bingler, Sequim’s head coach since the program’s inception in 1998, said the timing system would be appreciated.

"We’ve had to go back to using parents and onlookers with hand-held stop watches to time our swim meets," she said. "It takes 18 people to check and recheck swimmer’s times for every heat now. Often, there’s just hundredths of seconds difference between first and second place and human error becomes a real factor. We need a new up-to-date timing system."

The Wolves’ swim and dive teams practice daily at the

Sequim Aquatic Recreation Center during fall (girls) and winter (boys) seasons.

The 2008 SHS Wolves girls swim team members are: Alex Rose Albert, Brooke Ansotegui, Kelsey DeWald, Meredith Evridge, Mia Evridge, Kristina Farviova, Colsie Froerer, Rachel Hardy, Shelby Heyer, Rachel Hughes, Emily Jakubisin, Karlee Johnston, Autumn Kessinger, Louise Showers, Billie Jane Stone, Sarah Stuart Keltonic and Gianna Vennetti. Divers Hannah Apelt and Rose Hawkins may be sponsored as well.

Sponsors may choose to support one or more members of the team. For more information, call parent Dick Hughes at 460-7465, or contact him by e-mail: dick@sequimeducation foundation.org.
