Track & Field: Sequim squads post strong marks in Belfair

With a strong showing across the board last week, Sequim’s boys track team picked up a sweep of Olympic League foes while SHS’s girls earned their first wins of the season.

Riley Martin, Murray Bingham and Payton Glasser each had two individual event wins to pace the Wolves’ boys team as they racked up 105 team points in Belfair on April 10, topping host North Mason (96 points), Bremerton (47) and Chimacum (13).

Elizabeth Sweet earned a pair of first-place finishes for Sequim’s girls (50.5 points) as they placed second to North Mason (89) and ahead of Chimacum (49) and Bremerton (37.5).

Martin continues to set personal bests in the 110-meter high hurdles, topping the field last week in 15.51 seconds — the top time among 2A boys runners in the state this season, according to athletic.net. It’s a mark he’d eclipse by nearly four-tenths of a second four days later at the Terrace Invite.

Martin also set a personal best in the 300 hurdles with a 41.35 mark, the sixth-best 2A boys mark this season.

Glasser set a personal best in the high jump with a meet-best 5-10 effort and added a 106-3 throw in the discuss, both earning first-place finishes. He also took third in the shot put (36-4).

Bingham swept the distance races, winning the 3,200 meters in a season-best 10:22 and the 1,600 meters in just over 5 minutes.

Riley Cowan threw a season-best 163 feet, 5 inches in the javelin for first place, topping the second-place finisher by nearly 36 feet; it’s the fourth-best 2A boys mark in the state. Cowan added a second place finish in the shot put at 36-6.

Liam Byrne topped the field in the pole vault with an 11-foot effort; teammates Noah White and Connor Forderer was fourth and fifth, respectively, with 9-foot vaults.

Teammate Fischer Jesnsen was second in both hurdles events behind Martin, with a 17.17 in the 110 event and a personal record 43.12 in the 300.

Trey Brouillard was second in the 400 meters, finishing in 56.28. Teammate Jakob Pyeatt placed second in the 800 meters with a 2:18 effort and second in the 1,600 meters with a personal-best 5:14.

Darren Salazar placed second in the 200-meter dash, finishing in 24.16 seconds. He was also third in the 100-meter dash, a personal best 11.45 in a close race that saw the top four finishers separated by 0.12 of a second.

Logan Laxson took third in the long jump with a 18-8.5 mark.

Sequim’s boys swept the relays as well, with Laxson, Salazar, Silas Isenberger, Logan Laxson and Alec Shingleton clocking in at 45.26 to take the 4×100 relay, while Brouillard, Isenberger, Salazar and Martin, topped the 4×400 field in 3:42.99.

On the girls’ side, Sweet won the pole vault with a 9-6 mark and first in triple jump 29-8.75.

Kristinna Barnet won the 400-meter race in 2:50, a personal best, while Shayli Schuman won the 100-meter hurdles in 17.36 seconds.

Lindsey Leader was second in the shot put (27-9.5). Hannah Lewis was third in the pole vault (7-0) and the long jump (12-8.5). SHS senior Telicia Busby was third in the 100-meter dash (14.19).

The Wolves’ 4×100 relay team (Barnet, Busby, Mary McAleer and Daisy Ryan) edged Bremerton by less than 0.3 of a second with a 53.72 mark. Sequim’s 4×200 team (Busby, McAleer, Ryan and Kiara Pierson) also placed first, winning in 1:56.60.

With low numbers on their roster, Sequim’s girls did not compete in seven events at the league meet.

Martin Bingham shine at Terrace Invite

Bingham set a personal record in the 1,600 meters with a 4:25 finish — the second best 2A mark in that event in Washington state this season — and was second in the 800 meters at 2:00.88.

Martin bettered his state-best 2A 110 hurdles time with a 15.14-second effort, and added a third-place finish in the 300 hurdles (41.59). Teammate Fischer Jensen took sixth in the 110 hurdles with a personal best 16.92, and was fifth in the 300 hurdles (53.35).
