Jayson Brocklesby and Jasmine McMullin are used to making big leaps — but this one is the biggest of the season.

The Sequim High seniors both set school records at the West Central District meet in Sumner on Saturday, on their way to earning berths to the state meet this weekend.

With alternates, Sequim will send 15 athletes — competing in 10 individual or relay events — to the class 2A state meet at Mount Tahoma High School, May 23-25.

Already a school record-holder in the high jump, Brocklesby broke the school mark in the 400-meter dash with a 49.67-second finish to earn the district title. He also leaped 6 feet, 4 inches in the high jump, tying Taylor Stephens of North Kitsap and Jaysen Yoro of Orting for first.

McMullin broke her own school record in the triple jump with a 36-foot, 8.5-inch leap, second at districts to Janayla Scott of Lindbergh (38-1.75). McMullin also earned a state berth in the long jump, placing fourth at districts.

Brocklesby and McMullin also had hands — actually, legs — in getting more Wolves to state with relay teams. Brocklesby joined Judah Breitbach, Christian Miles and Lopaka Yasumura to help earn second place in the 4×100 relay, just 0.29 seconds behind district champ Orting. Sequim’s 4×400 relay team (Brocklesby, Dylan Chatters, Hamish Peers and Oscar Herrera) took fifth at districts. McMullin teamed with Sarah Hutchison, Hannah Hudson and Waverly Shreffler for fifth place in the girls’ 4×400 relay.

Yasumura took second overall in the shot put, missing a district title by 0.25 inches to Olympic’s Kyle Campbell.

Hutchison, a junior, posted a 9-foot, 9-inch mark in the pole vault for a berth to state, while freshman Audrey Shingleton did the same in finishing fifth in the 800-meter race.

Joshua Cibene just missed a state berth in the pole vault after setting a personal best (12-3).
